  • cow juice, living alone and Grandad to the rescue

    - 31 Oct 2012 - 2 comments
I made a quick dash to the shop this morning,I needed cow juice and since the Milkman stopped the daily doorstep deliveries I haven't been organised and occasionally run low.The same thing with my eggs and spuds. On the way I met up with 5 people and four of them were solo dwellers like myself. We are all of a similar age so I suppose that is to be expected. When I first lost Margaret 12 years ago I was in a poor state of health both mentally and physically and I found being alone for the fir…

today is a cracking day all blue sky and sunshine. The birds have returned and having a party in the garden and everybody is smiling. WOWSER! now I am just waiting for the food delivery and might even make another break for freedom later. the day is good. photos here

  • Another day another soup and Killer rivers inThe Human Planet

    - 28 Oct 2012 - 3 comments
Late last night while waiting for Jenny to call I noticed the garden and front street were white with what I thought was snow but thankfully it turned out to be hail. This morning I awoke to rain and it hasn't stopped since, the birds have been absent no doubt hunkered down and the garden is flooded yet again. As I was going to be cabined up and a north westerly was howling I decided a pan of soup was a good idea and settled for chicken and noodles, easy to do and just the ticket for this weather.…

  • I'm fair nithered and Sambuca needed

    - 27 Oct 2012 - 4 comments
Today has been sunny but very cold so I layered up and wandered off heading nowhere in particular. I strolled awhile then called at the booze shop for some grog,a must when watching the egg chasers and footie over the weekend. Stacy was on duty and after we both decided the weather was a tad cool she informed me of her Saturday night out. Not for her a trip round town sampling the delights of the local drunks fighting and puking, oh no not our Stacy. She and a group of friends are toddling off t…

  • A cold lazy dreary day

    - 26 Oct 2012 - 3 comments
The day started promisingly enough with patchy cloud letting the sun through but by late morning the sky was slate gray and the temps down to 40f with a biting north westerly. I am not alone with this cold snap Jenny and Sue report similar conditions. I did go for a walk but cut it short is was not pleasant out there and I haven't broken my winter coats out yet,I might do that tonight. I haven't been able to kick start into doing anything much since then. For dinner it was minced beef and veg w…

  • Here comes Winter

    - 24 Oct 2012 - 3 comments
The harbingers of winter have arrived on our shores. Every year around this time we get an influx of thousands of Starlings from Northern Europe who overwinter here. I heard them coming earlier but they are so fast that by the time I got to the window with my camera I was only in time to catch the tail end of the flock. Never mind they will be more in arrivals in the next few days I might be luckier then. Fantasia has the first snow of the season over the pond and we have the Starlings and the…

  • Cat at play

    - 23 Oct 2012 - 1 comment
I looked out of the window earlier and spotted Ginger down the bottom of the garden,at first glance he appeared to have caught some sort of creature and I was about to go to the rescue when I noticed his kill was in fact a leaf. He was really worrying it but it put up a good fight before Ginger tired of the game and wandered off. Looking at the mess out there it is hard to believe that for the last couple of years that area has been full of colour from wild flowers with blooms aplenty and bees…

  • Who did that?

    - 23 Oct 2012 - 3 comments
As I gazed at the old man staring back at me through the mirror while I was scraping my chin with a razor this morning I noticed something odd,OK I noticed something odder. In the night somebody has crept in and given me a neck transplant. They have stolen my nice smooth neck and replaced it by one resembling a turkey's.I think these are the same people that have exchanged and added bits over the years without my knowledge such as the extra chin which I really have no need for. They also replac…

  • Things ain't what they seem to be.

    - 22 Oct 2012 - 3 comments
I like to buy British whenever possible here are a couple of examples of things that are not what they seem.I must remember to take my specs shopping with me. The first is a tin of Scottish shortbread,a traditional cover of tartan,a Coat of Arms and the name Montgomery's of St Andrews. OK a product produced just over the border so not far to travel. However if you read the reverse of the label there are the words Product of Indonesia. The second example…

  • Boats and flowers

    - 21 Oct 2012 - 1 comment
Another fine morning here so a wander off into the sunshine seemed a perfect way to spend a little time as I have been cabined up a lot this year with the rain.I needed to get some bird fodder so I thought that will be part of the walk and a slow trawl to see if I could spot a bargain or two. When I was filling the bird feeders earlier I spotted one or two blooms defying the odds and flowering again, the Sweet Williams are very persistent and have made a third comeback. I took a few snaps they a…

  • A stroll in the sun on a warm October day

    - 19 Oct 2012 - 3 comments
Today has been a wonderful day with sunshine from early til late. I was intending to pay a visit to the market and have a tootle around but the weather was much too good for that. I filled my water bottle made up a couple of ham buns and headed for the beach. There was more water than land in the salt marshes today with the spring tide nearly full in Even beside the sea the day was still and warm really one out of the blue so I wandered a long chatting to folk, everybody had smiles today. There…

  • A lot of water and a tidy churchyard

    - 18 Oct 2012 - 3 comments
Yesterday we had sunshine and showers and I managed to escape for a little while. Knowing it was a very high spring tide I wandered down to the channel side and took a snap of the water flowing under the bridge. 10 metres of water being driven on by a brisk south westerly wind caused flooding to some parts of the island but here the sea stayed on it's own side. I spotted some very threatening weather closing in so turned for home just having time to take a photo of the graveyard, they hav…

  • air kissing and venting ones spleen

    - 17 Oct 2012 - 4 comments
Where did all this air kissing come from? it seems very popular within the so called celeb world but I have never seen it happen in the real world. Where I live you greet people either with a firm handshake,a hug, a hug and a peck on the cheek or a hug and a proper kiss.Of course there are different levels of kisses,I wouldn't grab my old auntie and bend her backwards to deliver a full blown smacker,a gentle peck will suffice unless I want smacking with her handbag We don't do high fives either…

  • A cold day and preparing for Winter

    - 16 Oct 2012 - 2 comments
Today is a lot colder, wetter and wilder than yesterdays brief journey into a calm Autumn. Not the day for wandering so I have stayed close to home sorting a few of the little tasks that crop up for time to time. If you read yesterday about the fridge soup I made, well I am very glad I did today is real soup weather. I had a bowl last night, see photo and very tasty it it too. This morning I blitzed half of the remainder so I can have some in my Number 1 mug for a belly warmer with some crusty bre…

  • A walk in the morning sunshine, fridge soup and the crazy woman returns home

    - 15 Oct 2012 - 2 comments
This morning has turned out to be the sort of Autumnal day we rarely see here now.The sun is shining there is little wind only a Zephyr not even stirring the leaves on the trees. As the great Bard wrote. "They are as gentle As zephyrs blowing below the violet, Not wagging his sweet head." I had a nice stroll along the prom taking full advantage of the sunny spell because tomorrow we are back to wet and windy. We had frost overnight which has prompted me to get the large saucepan dust…
