Two Inns & a Bank ~ Mere, Wiltshire.

Two Inns & a Bank ~ Mere, Wiltshire.
Well, that's what they once were. Now the Ship Inn has been converted to flats and the adjoining building, which was Lloyd's Bank, is also converted to flats! Thankfully the George Inn on the right remains a busy pub!
The PiP shows the Lloyd's Bank building more clearly.

The Ship Inn was empty for about 5 years, so better having the conversion to flats than letting it deteriorate. Thank you so much for your kind comments Gunter.

Best wishes and a good new week,
Rosa.

The speed at which banks have been closing their branches is shocking, only matched perhaps by the number of pubs closing. What a world.

A beautifully composed image Rosa............it's a shame the pub and the bank had to go, but hopefully more local people with be able to get accommodation, which is often a problem. At least the ex-pub building kept that lovely old sign.

The ex-bank building looks really lovely, especially when viewed in the PiP, you've never guess it used to be a bank.

The whole place looks very well looked after.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
I would like to think that local people have bought them Keith. I've seen a couple online and they look nice. Plenty of parking behind the Ship Inn as well.

The old bank hasn't altered much from the outside. Nice to see flowers on the walkway to the main door. Mere is a very tidy little town and is always so friendly.

Thank you for your kind comments and I wish you a good new week.

I think I was lucky to get the pictures just at the right time Roger, as the road was quite busy. I think there might have been a problem on the A303 for a while and they were sending traffic through the town. Many thanks for your kind comments.

Impressive metal work for something that no longer exists , Lloyds are still closing branches I noticed the one in Ashby-de-la-Zouch is closing, ay least the flats are homes not student accommodation . I hope you have a nice Monday Rosalyn Good night

I expect the sign is listed along with the building Peter. Not much call for student accommodation in Mere :-) Have a good new week Peter.

The banks always had the really elegant buildings. The NatWest in Shrewsbury s a lovely building that luckily still works as a bank - for now. You are lucky to have one pub that still thrives. Ruyton used to have 3 pubs. We now have one left which only opens three times a week and is for sale.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Amelia club
They did have very elegant buildings Amelia, showing how important they were back then. One in Wincanton is now a hairdressers and another is now the Police Station. The third one is still for sale. I hope you keep yours in Shrewsbury! Mere used to be part of the London to Exeter road, so the Ship Inn was a busy coaching Inn. It was sad to see it close, but there are three more pubs in the town.

Hi Rosa
A very nice picture, which I like very much!
It looks a really nice quiet and peaceful village. Lets hope the occupants of the flats are of high enough social class to keep it that way!
I do like the metalwork of the sign, but wonder if the run double decker busses past here!!
Best Wishes, Happy Monday a nice week ahead, and stay safe!!

Beautiful images Rosa. It looks very attractive there with the melow colours of the stonework.

I think the same fate befell many pubs and often covid was the final straw for them. It is sad though.

The flats do look lovely but it is a shame the bank closed. Even in Bridgwater our bank has reduced hours and days of opening but at least we still have them. I thught you were going to say the bank was now a Wetherspoons!! Banks and libraries seem to popular buildings for them to convert.

Have a lovely week Rosa. Take care
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Ecobird club
Thank you Carol. Yes, Covid closed many pubs. I am surprised that the one in our village is still going, but very pleased.

I have seen a few places, as you mention, being a Wetherspoons now. The old cinema in Chard is one. In Dorchester one of the old bank buildings is now an M&Co, and in Sturminster a rather nice vintage clothes/second hand shop is now making use of a bank building.

Have a good new week :-))

A sign of our times... At least it's unchanged on the outside and there's still a pub left:-)
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Gudrun club
It is a shame as it was a good pub but probably not enough people in the town to keep it going. It was once an important coaching Inn on what was the main route from London to Exeter. At least it is a listed building,so cannot be altered on the outside.

I had quite forgotten about this photo, and Adrian's brother organised the hotel (yes The George Inn) for the night. Even when I looked around the village and inspected the Bank, The George and the Ship Inn I still didn't connect! It wasn't until I started sorting out the photos that I realised I had seen photos of Mere in your gallery. I don't think I have a shot of the Post Office though. ;-)

All the side streets there are lovely and have a lot to photograph. Then there is Castle Hill, but that's quite a climb! I used to cycle to Mere a lot to see school friends from my home just 4 miles away, but in Dorset.
