The Blue House ~ Frome

The Blue House ~ Frome
Built in 1726, the Blue House, once a school, used to be known as the Blue School, due to the colour of the school's uniforms. It was also built as a home for elderly women and run alongside the school. It is now an alms house. Although it was built at the same time as Rook Lane Chapel, (in PiP) the Blue House actually cost almost four times as much to build.

Rook Lane Chapel (PiP) built in 1707, was originally known as Rook Lane Congregational Church. The building has recently been restored and is one of the most beautiful buildings on Bath Street. The building is now only used for special events, weddings and festivals in Frome.

Rook Lane Chapel.

Two well framed photos of these lovely old buildings. The chapel doesn't look that much smaller than the former school - at least from the front- so I wonder where that difference in building costs came from..

Thank you very much Gudrun. Maybe it was due to inflation....sounds familiar! I think the buildings are similar in size.
Happy Tuesday.

Thanks Nick. I prefer that one as well, but I would never have thought the other building was ever a church. Have a nice evening, Rosa.

A beautifully detailed image Rosa.............I love the look of that building and it's obviously been well looked after and renovated over the year. Good to see it's still in use. I especially like the statue of the child over the door and the elderly woman above that to show who the occupants were. Two beautifully shaped trees as well.

The building in the PiP is also very impressive.............I particularly like the unusual windows. I'd never have guessed it was a church though, it looks more like a mansion house.

Lot's of lovely rain here over the past couple of days, with more to come during the rest of the week. My lawn seems to be recovering nicely, although there are an awful lot of weeds which seem to have survived much better than the grass. Hope your garden is also recovering.

Thank you very much Keith. Yes it is well cared for and I had noticed it from a distance before, but was surprised at its present use. A very nice place to live with the river behind.

I certainly never guessed that the building in PiP was ever a church! It was interesting for me to look up about them when home. It makes a lovely wedding venue though.

Who would have thought we would call the rain 'lovely', but it is :-)) My grass is starting to recover, but still an awful lot of brown!

Although it's older the chapel looks more modern being less severe and more welcoming perhaps to encourage worshippers , I do wish they would ban parking against old buildings and think about the position of notice boards, the no parking one seems to be waste of time !! I hope you are having a pleasant evening Rosalyn

I was surprised that it had been a church Peter. It has been well renovated I would think. I expect with The Blue House now being an alms house, the cars could be visitors or even medical staff. There is very little parking there as it is just over a rather nice bridge. At the moment I am looking out at a darkening sky! I hope you have a good evening.

Two stunning examples of the beautiful architecture of Frome, Rosa. I was wondering why it was called the Blue House, till I read your note. Cheers, Joe

I think the chapel is more elegant than the Blue House, but the latter has a very interesting history. I have no idea why you would want to visit towns like Shrewsbury when you this on your doorstep.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Amelia club
It is rather elegant Amelia. The Blue House is in a more picturesque setting, next to the ancient bridge, which I forgot to take a picture of....next time ;-)) We love Shropshire and Herefordshire. The architecture is very different to this area.

Two wonderful old buildings and beautiful in their own right Rosa. I love the mellow colour of the stone and the lovely architecture. The arched windows in both are really attractive.
