Gentle Street ~ Frome

Gentle Street ~ Frome
Gentle Street is a narrow and historic street, with many houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Paved in its entirety with stone setts and once a major entry, it goes back to the origins of Frome in the 7th century. Mediaeval men called it Hunger Lane because of its steepness. It was the main High Street but later the Gentle family gave their name to it. London coaches left from the Waggon & Horses Inn, which is now a private dwelling, shown here on the left.

Not only the cobbles but also the mellow stone make this look so attractive! I guess when you're old and infirm it will be difficult to manage und for younger ones heels are not an option there;-)

Thank you for your kind comments Gudrun. I think your right, not a place for elderly people to live and best to leave the high heels at home ;-))

This is almost like stepping back in time Rosa. It is beautiful with the lovely stone walls and cobbled streets. It looks quite a steep climb up that hill.
Two terrific images and I enjoyed your notes that, together with your pictures, conjure up my own images of the romance of the days of the old coaching inns.

Have a great weekend

There are a lot of steps even before you get to the hill Carol, which is quite steep. I have been going to Frome for decades, but I only found this street about 5 years ago! It's not that far from Cheap Street, but I never went up the steps!! Thank you very much for your kind comments.

Wishing you a great week too.

This street looks anything but gentle Rosa..........especially on the knees and ankles :-))). It must have been quite difficult getting a coach and and horses up there, especially in the rain or snow!

A well composed image with lovely detail.............I especially like the colour of the stonework of the houses and those lovely cobblestones. Is that a drainage ditch running down the road or a filled in leat? I also like the greenery (and I see there's someone there doing some gardening).

A very nice PiP too.......with a beautiful street lamp.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
There are a lot of steps before you even get to the street Keith. Definitely need to watch the knees! I have been there when it was raining and it wasn't at all slippery thank goodness.

I think it's a drain rather than a leat running down the middle of the street. I bet you wanted to use that new word again ;-)) Obviously the spell checker has never heard of it as it keeps underlining it!
We had a chat o the man gardening...he was trying to pull out very deep rooted weeds :-)

Thank you for your kind comments Keith. Have a nice week.

Sound like hard work Rosa.......but worth the effort. I definitely wanted to use the word leat again :-)))

I think the spell-checker on here is more oriented towards US spellings.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
Ha ha, yes your right about the spellchecker leaning towards US spellings. Quite annoying for us!

A lovely street scene I assume the local stone didn't wear very well so granite sets were imported
maybe Groby Granite :)) I hope your week has started well Rosalyn, some heavy rain in the early hours Good night

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
Thank you Peter. There were, and still are, lots of stone quarries around Frome and on the Mendips, but I don't know where the setts came from. Thunder and rain here las night. Not enough though!

Hermosamente pintorescas estas ancianas casas de piedra que aguantan tan bien el paso del tiempo. La foto principal consigue una perspectiva inmejorable de la sucesión de casas en esa calle tan típica.
