Old Morris

Old Morris
Three photos I took in Ashmore, Dorset in May this year. The Morris van I was told is from 1963. The second picture shows signs for a vending machine opened in 2020 during the lockdown, but is still used now, so a permanent feature I think. The third picture is the garden wall near the vending machine building that I thought looked pretty.

Brilliant. I just checked out the car..........manufactured in 1963, it's still in use (it's tax doesn't expire until Nov). Such a lovely old car...........I think it's a Morris 1000. I learned to drive in one of these in 1974, but the one I used was the Traveller version with the rear windows with wooden frames. The MOD had a whole fleet of them in an RAF base in Barry Island, Wales. That brought back a few memories :-)

I love the two PiPs as well............especially the second one, which is just gorgeous! All three photos are beautifully taken. Thanks for sharing Rosa.

Oh thanks for the detective work Keith. I have changed it in the description. I have never driven one. They seem to be much loved and admired still. I liked the ones with the wooden frame :-) Always happy to bring back good memories.

Many thanks for your kind comments on all the pictures Keith.

You're welcome Rosa..........you can go to the DVLA website and put the registration number in and get very basic details. I can't imagine driving one now..........manual gearbox, no power steering, having to wind your own windows up and down, no aircon etc etc................

A wonderful old car Rosa. In good condition by the looks of it so no doubt it is someone's pride and joy. Two great PiPs. If it is good coffee I am not surprised the vending machine is still in use.
Lots of people stll want coffee on the go. I love the PiP showing the beautiful old wall and gorgeous flowers.

Have a lovely evening and great week.

Yes the car was in very good condition Carol. Ashmore is very popular with walkers, so I'm sure the vending machine comes in very handy for them, especially in the recent good weather.

Thank you for all your kind comments and I hope you have a good new week.

Dear old Moggie, never driven one but got the shock of my short 4 or 5 yr old life when as a passenger in one the car rolled back instead of forward on Holywell Hill in St. Albans. I was scared to death I was going to die ... vivid memory

Love the series Rosa, as always superbly captured.

P.S. Do you think they'd sell me that numberplate with SRN on it?

Hollywell Hill is a very nice street. I can think of worse places in which to meet one's maker ( - of course very glad it didn't come to that!)

Unfortunately I haven't seen the car since that day. I'm wondering what the SRN might stand for. State Registered Nurse maybe??

And now for some boring stuff!!

In the original vehicle registration number system most major towns and cities, counties too, had their own specific series of letters for the number plates they issued. The ‘RN’ series was issued in Preston, Lancashire. The system started with the issue of RN 1-9999 continuing with ARN 1-999, BRN 1-999 etc.

SRN was issued circa late 1962 into 1963. SRN 375 was assigned to a bus operated by Preston Corporation in December 1962 and SRN 840 to a coach operated by Premier Coaches of Preston in March 1963.

So, Rosa the date you were given regarding the age of the van sounds most authentic and would have been just a normal standard series issue.
