Victoria's Butterfly Gardens, Part 5: Lotus Blossom Buds and a Final Group of Butterflies and More! (+11 insets)

Trip Talk: Victoria Butterfly Gardens…one last set of pictures, and the latest on our new RV!
Well, I've finally managed to get through all of the Butterfly Gardens pictures! I'm glad I took the time to process what I could from because there was such an interesting variety. It sure would be nice to live near a place like this, as, just like Butchart Gardens, one could never run out of fantastic subjects to photograph!

The latest on our new RV: We've been tweaking it like crazy…adding this and that, purchasing some necessary items, and building a few things. There will be some new shelves but for the most part we've only needed to buy plastic bins in various sizes. The cabinets are lined with non-stick matting now, doors protected from banging with little felt dots and stoppers. We've had to figure out where everything goes, and one thing's for sure, there's a LOT of ROOM! What a difference from the Grey Wolf. If all goes well, we'll be able to go on a short trip in a few days!

Today's Pictures
I simply had to post this picture first, even though I have some wonderful butterflies to share as well. I am crazy about lily pads and lotus blossoms, and when I saw the gorgeous display in one area of their pond, I was beside myself with happiness. Looking through my images, I took a look at this one and was really surprised. It's not always obvious what dof you should choose for an image like this so I took a handful at different settings. As it turned out, a shallow dof created some wonderful bokeh but exacting, crisp detail just where I wanted it: the buds and the edge of the lily pad leaf. It wasn't something I planned and so I was really delighted to get this shot!

Inset 1: I managed to get a very good picture of this unidentified butterfly as it sat on a nearby leaf. If you know what it's called, I'd love to find out!

Inset 2: Here's a cropped-in close-up of the previous picture!

Inset 3: This colorful Bird of Paradise was the most brightly-colored I've ever seen! These are such bizarre-looking flowers and I simply can't resist taking pictures of them whenever I find one.

Inset 4: A nearly-neon-colored Blue Wave butterfly enjoys some banana at a feeding station.

Inset 5: A delicate beauty in shades of brown with white markings, this is the Blue Moon Butterfly. Thanks to Jakob Bärfuss for the positive identification! :)

Inset 6: Lovely Blue Porterweed flowers growing along a green stem...thanks to Ron Hanko for the positive ID on these lovely blossoms! He got a picture of his own when he and his wife went to Australia one year! And, a past ipernity member, Fizgig, identified the flower for him when Ron posted his picture! :D

Inset 7: Another picture of the Greenwing Macaw, what a beauty! There was a time when I considered getting a macaw and in my studies, I learned that Greenwings are known for being gentle and tend to be much better companions than Scarlets, which can be extremely feisty, the females in particular.

Inset 8: I couldn't resist another abstract picture of the canna lily leaf that I found. I just love the combination of lime green with rusty browns and all that cool texture!

Inset 9: I spotted this pair of Zebra Finches gathering nesting supplied and managed to get one picture to share!

Inset 10 and 11: This lily pad and Yellow Pond Lily blossom close-up were photographed on an earlier trip when Steve and I wandered up and down the Oregon coast. Considering the main pictures, I thought this pair would be a perfect addition to this presentation. While we were at Devil's Lake State Park campground a few months back, we went on their boardwalk trail. It led us through a marsh and ended at a pond. There I found a bunch of lily pads with flowers! Steve supported me on the soft mud so I could take pictures!

Pam, are you a fan of water lilies too? They are so exotic and beautiful and whenever I find them I absolutely must take pictures! HAH! This reminded me of some pictures I took a while back and I have processed them for this presentation, yay! I would love to see some of those ridiculously huge lily pads that can hold up a person! :D I'd just HAVE to give it a try! :D "Lunatic woman is hauled away after she is found in a pond laying on the lily pads!" Heh…well, I hope you are having a good day! It's another warm Indian Summer day and absolutely beautiful!

Explored on 11/05/19; highest placement #2.

And here I am again. Love your lead photo but those two close-ups of the butterfly blow my mind. They are without question today's winners. As to the other photos:
3. Have a photo of something very similar, photographed in Australia (though it's a new world plant) and identified as Parrot's Beak Heliconia. Not sure they are exactly the same, though: www.ipernity.com/doc/162835/42184706.
4. Just simply gorgeous and love its name.
5. I have a photo of this (not posted) but can't find the ID. Beautiful in its own quiet way.
6. I happen to have a photo of this taken in Australia! When I posted it, it was identified as Blue Porterweed: www.ipernity.com/doc/162835/42398472//in/album/899778.
7. What a wonderful bird. Have some photos of them taken at Bloedel Conservatory in Vancouver, but have never posted them.
8. Used to have a pair of Zebra Finches named Peep and Tom (say that fast enough and you'll get the reason for the names). Last time Nance and I were along the waterfront in Bellingham we saw one that must have been an escape. Have some photos of them, too, somewhere, taken, I think, at Bloedel.
9. The canna leaf is wonderful and I like way you've used the space. My dad always grew cannas.
10 and 11. I think this is native to the northwest and is what we call a Cow Lily: www.ipernity.com/doc/162835/16368391.

Anyway, on to other things. The accident with the deer must have traumatized Neal a bit. He slept all day, so his caregivers said. The car was hauled away this afternoon and we're hoping it can be fixed. We don't want to go car hunting again. In the meantime we're without a vehicle and will probably borrow one from friends who have a collection of old junkers. Nancy has to go away tonight but daughter Jessica is picking her up.

Most of the kids are on family chat and the chat was filled today with puns about the accident. They are merciless. When our other Sienna had a fire they wanted me to rename it 'burnt sienna" and these puns were all deer related about how we staggered away from the wreck, were doeing our best to get over the accident, were fawning over Neal as a result of his being traumatized, etc. It's a weird bunch.

Sounds like you know exactly what this was like. It was scary and only afterward did I realize how tense I was with sore neck and shoulders. If you'd have hit that deer on the motorcycle, though, it would have been far worse. Can't even imagine what that would have done and on a gravel road!

We had a close call a year or so ago near the Columbia. Were headed down into the gorge at night (Nancy was asleep) and all of a sudden there was a herd of elk on the road in front of me. Somehow, I still don't know how, I managed to thread my way through them at 70 mph without even grazing any of them. That would have been like hitting a wall and would have totaled the car.

Ta ta for now.

Another stunning series, in particular those butterfly macros, Janet. I must admit the only subjects I could identify were the Zebra Finches which come from here. Good to hear your new van is coming along so well. Thank you also very much for your kind wishes for my wife's health.

I've just come back from a week in Devon........where it rained every single day. Apart from some family snaps I took hardly any photos! It was good to see the family though :-)

Please forgive me for my brief comments............needs must if I am to catch up with everyone's photos. Normal service will resume as soon as possible :-)

Thanks for the note, Janet. We are doing fine. Must have tensed up a bit yesterday when we had the accident - had sore shoulders and neck this morning - but nothing really amiss. They came and hauled the car away yesterday afternoon and we are waiting to hear from the insurance adjusters. I have to fly out of town this weekend and so we are waiting to get a car until Monday. We didn't have coverage for that but are not really that inconvenienced since we have family in town. Had to cancel Neal's visit today, but he was very tired from the trip anyway. We're still hoping they don't total it, but will have to deal with that if they do. Edward showed photos of it to someone at work and they were sure it was going to be totaled.

I tried to suggest the group Ask an Expert for your butterfly but the main photo is in to many groups you would have to remove it from one, or post the butterfly as a separate photo that might work

Oh wow, Janet. I just love your photos. The ones of the butterflies are amazing - I especially love the close up of the unidentified one. As for your flowers - just simply stunning. I love the bird of paradise, but the main picture of the water lilies is really something else. Your photographs are so wonderful, that I'm surprised you manage to find any that can't be shown here. I would think Pumpkin wouldn't be too keen on you having a macaw, even if you do like the colours!!! I'm so pleased to hear that you are going to have lots more room in your new RV - you are going to have to show us what the inside looks like. Not having seen any over here - our roads aren't really big enough to manage having them. You say that the weather is lovely over there - can we have some of that over here please. It's cold, I have to put the fire on AND wear a thermal vest!!!!! Not fair eh? Have a great week.

As always a most beautiful series of photos, Janet. The main photo is superb as are all the others.
I love your ramblings about the visit to the butterfly garden, and the progress made on the RV, which I assume is some type of motor home. I don't know how you have time to write so much and produce such gorgeous photos.
