Victoria's Butchart Gardens, Part 3: Macro and More! (+10 insets)

Victoria's Butchart Gardens, Part 3: Macro and More! (+10 insets)
Trip Talk: Eavesdropping and Fun Conversation at Butchart Gardens

While Steve and I were enjoying our day at Butchart, I noticed a young girl concentrating on aiming her phone camera at a flower. Next to her was an older man and I heard her say, "Oh, look at this one!" The older man, I guess her grandfather, was watching with a smile on his face. "That's a beauty!" The girl replied, "Do you think mom and dad are going to be worrying about us?" Leaning into a flower for his own picture, he answered, "No, they knew what would happen if both of us went off with our cameras, there's only one Butchart Gardens!" I had to laugh as I meandered on…they got that right!

While Steve and I were stumbling around in the Sunken Garden, Steve saw a couple taking pictures of each other. Whenever he sees this, he walks right up and offers to take the couple's portrait, and this pair was very happy that he offered. Steve gave them modeling cues and made a joke to get them to laugh for their photo. I was focusing on the imageI was taking but couldn't help overhearing their snickering and the happy chatter from the couple. We wandered down the path together and talked about the park and pictures until parting company at some point. Later on we ran into them again and it was fun to say hello. What an amazing place to be.

Today's Pictures

I had a really hard time choosing which picture should be my main one--they are all such a bunch of screaming divas! I finally just closed my eyes and picked at random. It turned out to be another Candy-Striped Gazania, this one in yellow and red with a very shallow dof. The enormous patch of gazanias we found threatened to shackle me to the spot…I just couldn't get enough of these ridiculously colorful flowers! (I've included an inset of the other gazania picture I shared)

Inset 1: a pair of purple-blue Lobelia against a sea of flowers transformed into colorful bokeh

Inset 2: a brilliant orange and red Marigold in front of many others

Inset 3: a perfectly pink Impatien

Inset 4: an ornate coral and white Impatien with a group of back-up beauties

Inset 5: a hot-pink Impatien in a pack of others

Inset 6: here's a punch-drunk honey bee crawling around on Lantana…there were so many insects enjoying the bounty offered by the Garden's millions of flowers!

Inset 7: another glowing abstract of a Canna leaf

Inset 8: more lovely curls from the succulent I saw when entering the park

Inset 9: a carpet of colorful Coleus

Inset 10: a human-sized chess set! I enjoyed watching this boy heft pieces around on the board. Apparently one of the pieces wasn't there judging by the sign, "We apologize for the missing chess piece. It is currently being repaired."

Pam, have you ever tried growing flowers like gazanias? I'd like to at some point but won't bother until we can have a garden in a cooler setting and without critters I have to fight with! I hope you're having a good day. It's rainy and cold here today, not lovely like Butcharts!

Another marvellous colourful set of images, Janet, with the boy giving scale to the chess set. Many thanks for your very generous comments on my Milky Way Bow, the main "needs" are a good tripod, a wide lens and a fairly dark site. Re Lantana, the problem is that it's not native but has gone feral in bushland here.

Janet, once again I'm running out of superlatives to describe your photos...........they're all just fantabulous..!!

The main image is just perfect...............and immediately recognisable as your "style" of razor-thin depth of field and gorgeous bokeh.

I can't possibly pick a fave but a couple caught my eye more than the others - the glowing Canna leaf and the curly-edged succulent..........both amazing!

A fascinating narrative as always...........I love that Steve went out of his way to take the couple's photo..........what a nice thing to do!

Keep 'em coming!

Another great series of photos, Janet. Hard indeed to choose one, but I think my first choice is the curls on the Yucca? leaf. The flowers are exquisite and I like the Zinnia photo best, but they are all wonderful. Love those New Guinea Impatiens but planting them in Spokane is just feeding the deer. That photo of the backlit Canna leaf is also stunning. I'll just give them all first prize.

If you ever do go to Yellowstone it is unbelievably crowded in the summer and you have to make reservations well in advance. There are a number of first-come-first-serve campgrounds, but you';ll be waiting in line a long time even if you get there very early. I think Madison and Canyon are the two that take reservations but are usually booked up early in the year.

Our practice when we are in Yellowstone is to get up around sunrise, spend a couple of hours sightseeing, 6-10ish, and then hole up in the campground or go to some of the more out-of-the-way places the rest of the day and then go out again around 5 when the majority of tourists have departed and stay 'til sundown. We also sometimes go swimming in the Firehole River in the afternoon.

You can stay outside the park, too, but except for the north entrance, it is quite a long drive back into the park and the only entrances that have accommodations close by as I remember are the west (West Yellowstone) and north (Gardiner). It is possible also to stay in the Tetons and drive into Yellowstone, but that, too, is a fairly long though beautiful drive. Still not a place to be missed.

Rainy and cold here in Michigan, so we haven't done much photography. Had hoped to get out today but though it was sunny this morning it is threatening rain once again. We are going to the Upper Peninsula next week for a few days, though, and the weather is supposed to be good. Hoping to see the autumn colors when we go up there and some of the places we went on our honeymoon 45 years ago.

Guess that's about it. Ta, ta.

Back again - forgot one thing. Almost all the rivers in Yellowstone are open for fishing but it is, as far as I know, all fly fishing and all from the banks or by wading. Saw a lot of fishermen this time and I think the fish are all trout.

What amazing pictures Janet. Mandi grows gazanias in her garden, in fact they seem to be everywhere in Turkey. Even Lantanas - apparently they deter mozzies and other skin biting insects. I love the curls on the succulent leaf - they're beautiful. I am like Keith, I'm running out of superlatives to describe your photos. Every one is so gorgeous and of course I love all of them. I thought it was lovely of Steve offering to take pictures of the couple, it was so kind of him, because it meant they would always have pictures of themselves together at this beautiful garden. Also I had to laugh at the man and his granddaughter taking pictures, knowing her parents wouldn't worry because they had their cameras with them. Have a wonderful weekend the two of you. It's gone quite cold here and apparently we are receiving the end of Hurricane Lorenzo, which had been over your country - you could have kept it - we wouldn't have minded!!!
