1874 Euchoeca nebulata (Dingy Shell)

1874 Euchoeca nebulata (Dingy Shell)
Geometridae, Larentiinae - Wingspan: 18-24mm.

A locally occurring species which may be found in suitable habitats of central and southern UK. Usually found in established damp woodland, mainly to the east of the county. This species has the distinction for a moth of resting with wings closed, butterfly fashion, and is unlikely to be found otherwise. It is a fairly uniform buff on the underside with faint bands, often not discernable in older specimens. The top of the wings, if ever seen, are are a slightly smoky shade of buff, giving rise to the common name.

The flight season in Cornwall is slightly earlier than that given for the UK as a whole, occurring from May to early July.
