Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto, five years ago today

Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto, five years ago today
In back is Old City Hall (E. J. Lennox, 1899). It is commonly believed to have incorporated features of three other Richardsonian Romanesque buildings -- the Allegheny County Courthouse and the Cincinnati and Minneapolis city halls. It also resembles the Milwaukee Federal Building, which also opened in 1899.

There is another view in the note at top left.

It's a very classy building. The clock tower has echoes of Big Ben. It's fascinating to look at large. There is so much going on.

Thanks, Jean. Of course the city wanted to tear this building down and replace it with an office tower. A furious citizenry stopped them, though. Unfortunatrly, the opulent interior had been pillaged by then.

Wow! So much going on there John and so many people about. Definitely worth viewing large for the amazing detail you've captured. A super street image!

I'm guessing it will be much quieter than this nowadays!

Thank you, Keith. This was taken when the Pan-American games were being held in Toronto; the stage behind the Toronto sign is gone now. But yes, I imagine there far fewer people there today, although Toronto is now allowed to have some outdoor gatherings.

An interesting contrast between the old "traditional" buildings and the skyscrapers, John.

Old City Hall was the dominant building in downtown Toronto in the early twentieth century, Keith. Now it's surrounded by much taller buildings.
