Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto

Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto
The sculpture is Henry Moore's Three-Way Piece No. 2: Archer.

The PiP shows another outdoor Moore in Toronto. The Art Gallery of Ontario has 900 other pieces by him.

The National Gallery in Berlin also has a cast of this -- the Toronto fundraising campaign fell short, so Moore knocked the price down in return for being allowed to sell a second cast.

The Didrichsen Art Museum in Helsinki has a much smaller marble version.

I love the grand scale of these things, and that those who gaze upon them perceive different things. Sometimes I wonder how much sandpaper was needed to get them smooth.

An interesting thought, TLC. A cursory check revealed that sawing, welding, and carving seem to be involved.

My chief thought on looking at this is chiefly that it should be much bigger.

A lot to see again. And a nice composition transforming the sculpture into everyday-life. Art meets social reality !

Thanks, Ulrich. Children like to play on the sculpture in the PiP.

Wonderful contrast and what a pleasure to feel so very much in the in the middle of urban life as it shows freely here.

There's something going on every weekend at the square, Jos&eacute, and often during the week.

Amazing sculpture. The shape is wonderful and I love the way the guy lying on the plinth almost mimics it.

I didn't pay him to do that, either, Jean.

What a lot of detail - but the "talon" dominates the shot such that there is a unequivocal subject. I'm glad you didn't title it Subs n' Tubs.

The angle of the sculpture carves out an almost perfect shield shape above it - urban windows rampant?

Torontonians love glass, too, Bob. Over the las ten or so years they've filled downtown up with glass boxes, which are not exactly ideal for the climate.

I like the fact that no one seems to be taking any notice of this huge piece of artwork...........it has become so familiar, that it is almost "invisible".

The sculpture had its fiftieth anniversary two years ago, Keith. Of course, most Torontonians disapproved of it at first. Too modern -- although compared to New City Hall it's quite staid.

lots of curves of all sizes, shapes, and colo(u)rs ...

Colour is what's needed at Nathan Phillips, Sarah. Plenty of curves there, but it's all concrete. If they painted New City Hall the purple of the bowl in the picture I could love it. Or at least the south elevation. The other elevations are unrelieved concrete.
