Re-edit of an old photo. I think it's more interesting large (click the pic to find out if you agree!).

This is powerful geometry and certainly has greater impact when viewed large. I particularly like the shades of green on the left-hand side and the way that the dilapidated panel which occupies a doorway is recessed and bordered on two sides by dense black stripes. The shadows crossing at an angle add complexity too. There is an air of abandonment about this building. It looks as though it was built to a price and never much loved. Perhaps it is some publicly funded institution.

Thanks, TLC. You've described the geometry better than I have ever been able to. And yes, it is a public institution and could be better cared for. The panels are still there, although a little less dowdy than they were when this was taken, and the bench has disappeared.

Taking away the bench was a barbarous act against humanity and art. Although the building is plain, the bench invited people to pause and look beyond its failings of architecture. Even the most unremarkable things have interest in them somewhere, but now the message is to hurry past, to look elsewhere. It is an admission of failure.

Très intéressante cette image qui, même sans un personnage, fait penser au monde du peintre Edward Hopper....!!

Thanks, Robert. Now that you mention it, the light reminds me of much of Hopper's work.

Limbo has described the powerful geometry - no need to repeat that. But there is some whimsy as well - the bit of trash left by the bench and the shrubbery peeping in at the left.. Maybe even the two semicircles - the shadow a left and the manhole cover at bottom left.

I wrote a paper on Macbeth with this kind of "analysis" back in college days. The professor was not impressed.

Your analysis sounds pretty good compared to the "analyses" I was submitting to professors in my youth. In these postmodernist days, though, I might have done better.

Indeed. Lovely colors, contrasts, shapes, and ... what did our erstwhile friend call it? Disruptors?

Thanks, Sarah. I checked, and violators is the term. They are all over the place, aren't they? There may be more violators than design. Thanks for pointing that out.

Simplicity at it's Best ! A great composition which reminds me to 'Bauhaus'-style !

Thanks, Ulrich. There are few truly modernist buildings in Toronto, but we have many staid adulterations of modernism.

Agree. Larger brings out the man inside the building, the trees left, the torn paper. It's simplicity and complexity at the same time,

Nice light and some interesting shadows there John.............the detail in the brickwork is super and I like the shape of the paving tiles.
