University Avenue, Toronto

University Avenue, Toronto
Taken in 2013 on University Avenue in Toronto. The bust is of Mary Pickford, who was born on this block.

Pickford's first movie was Her First Biscuits. More about her here:

Love the creamy snow -- goes well with Mary Pickford, who had a most interesting career.
My husband loves silent movies, and when we were dating some three decades ago in L.A., he took me to the Silent Movie Theatre, which was still thriving then, though on a low budget, which meant no heat. It was winter, though obviously not as cold as in Toronto, and we were watching "The White Hell of Piz Palü."
Some experiences are much more amusing after the fact.

I wasn't familiar with "White Hell", but I looked it up and concluded that the lack of heat must have made the movie a much more authentic experience. What luck you have.

Plenty of snow that year. Mary looks miffed. So does the fire hydrant.

We have about as much snow at the moment, so I suspect Mary looks as miffed today. Here the hydrant has definitely had the worst of it.

Mary is reckoning she made a good move weatherwise when she went to California.

John FitzGerald club has replied to Jean
I dunno, Jean. She escaped cold weather by going to a land of earthquakes, landslides, and floods. She did stay there, though, even after she got her Canadian citizenship back.

Good point, Lutz. More evidence that we've been misled about the history of the cellphone:

You just couldn't resist sneaking a piece of street furniture into the shot, could you? I does make for a great contrast with the statue though.

A superb shot John.............very well composed and taken!

Thanks, Keith. Fire hydrants are cute. The ones here are hard to shoot, though. Those black caps seem to absorb light.

Eine schöne Winterimpression. Die Kälte springt rüber zum Betrachter. Mir fallen die schneebedeckte Skuöptur und der Hydrant besonders auf!

Well composed snowy scene: for me the hydrant at right photobombs Mary. :-)

Thanks, George. The hydrabt is better constructed, too, I think.

Whatever fascinating speech is the hydrant delivering to the statue?

John FitzGerald club has replied to John Sheldon club
Whatever it was, John, it was in too high a pitch for my aged ears. I hadn't noticed the resemblance between hydrants and orators before, so that will make my trips around Toronto more enjoyable. Thanks.
