The Fonthill Arch ~ Fonthill Bishop

The Fonthill Arch ~ Fonthill Bishop
Just past the Riverbarn, there is a splendid archway, The Fonthill Arch, which would have been the gatehouse and entrance to the different mansions and abbey and is believed to be the work of original Palladian architect Inigo Jones. It always amazes me that it is now part of the road to Tisbury!

That's true Maurice. The main house is still privately owned but they have open days to look around the grounds.

Lovely photo Rosa, I wonder what the rooms are used for?... and the good old rose giving a great display.

I wondered that John, as they were both used....maybe offices or living room one side and a quick hop to the bedroom the other side of the arch ;-) Thank you for your kind comment.

I've just read your description, Rosa, and I found it very intriguing, so I did some research.

'The FONTHILL ARCH : once the imposing entrance to Alderman Beckford's long-gone Fonthill Splendens mansion and Fonthill Park. Built by John Vardy in 1756, the Arch was probably designed by Inigo Jones. It is now the 'portal' to Fonthill Gifford parish and spans the lane connecting Fonthill Bishop to Tisbury in South West Wiltshire.'

It is amazing that a public road passes underneath.

The estate is still owned by the 3rd Lord Margadale, and they have open days throughout the year. I had a school friend who lived here in the 1960's that I used to stay with when there were dances in the pub hall....but I never saw this lovely part of the village at that time! I must have been more interested in the boys and pop music then ;-))

What a wonderful archway Rosa - so attractive and the roses are gorgeous. I imagine this might have been the accommodation for the gatekeeper in the past. What a delight to be able to drive through there. In Scotland we took photos of a castle where the main road goes through the grounds right in front of the castle

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Ecobird club
I should imagine the road in Scotland that you mention and this road under the arch would definitely have been private years ago....aren't we lucky now to be able to see and enjoy such sights. Thank you for your nice comments. have a great week Carol.
