Whitesheet Hill

Whitesheet Hill
Feeling in need of a good walk yesterday, bearing in mind social distancing, I found this place on the OS map. I have never been there before, despite it being just a few miles away. When I got home I found this out about it ~ Whitesheet Hill is of considerable archaeological interest. With a Neolithic enclosure dating from around 3000 BC, a circular earthwork, Bronze Age barrows and an Iron Age hill fort to the south.

Even in these harsh times, you have to enjoy yourself from time to time (if possible).

Looks like a steep climb Rosa ~ did you see anyone else walking?

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Nick Weall club
It was steep and high Nick. I didn't get to the very top! I saw a couple of dog walkers at the base of the hill, and they both had masks on. There were three people walking along the ridge, but I didn't make it that far!

I was a good walk Peter and not far from Stourhead. I could see the big house in the distance. I have been to the local Co-op and the shelves were full there. I hope you found your purple sprouting. Sounds lovely. Take care.

Wow, it seems you had quite an energetic walk! Lucky you to have such lovely and deserted places nearby.
Some of the advantages of living in the middle of a large city are turning into disadvantages now, too many people in the parks... But shopping is easy even though it was fuller than usual early in the morning.

I think the garden is going to be well tended in the next few weeks Gudrun! It was a lovely walk. I passed by Stourhead on the journey home and there were quite a few people walking around the estate. The National Trust have opened all their gardens and parks free! Stay safe and well.

Nice images and a great looking place Rosa, we have used the seafront/beach at Burnham and WWT at Steart marshes, but I guess both will be too busy now that the schools are closed,
Thinking cap on I fancy.
Thank you posting your image in the group

Thank you Roger. With no actual lock down it's a job to know where to go at the moment. Most people seem to be taking sensible precautions though.

That looks like quite a workout but it would give a great sense of achievement. It's amazing the places that are on our doorsteps and the history attached to them. I may do my early morning shopping tomorrow but otherwise am having a stay at home weekend. Who knows, I may even start doing some badly needed gardening.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Jean
It certainly was Jean! I didn't make it to the very top. The steps were so close to the edge and it was getting quite windy. I could hardly hold the camera still. I think our gardens may get the best manicuring they have had for years! Take care.

We do a lot of walking in the countryside and in the forest in the moment. It’s a good way for having some fresh air and to clean the mind. We are not yet quarantined until now but we stay at home voluntary. A nice set of pictures, Rosa ! Stay safe !

Good to get out in the fresh air Ulrich. We must all take sensible precautions and help to rid ourselves of this dreadful virus. Who would have believed all this a few months ago!!
Take care Ulrich and stay safe and well.

This is a super shot Rosa............the detail in the grass and steps is fantastic and there are a couple of lovely leading lines to the top! The image in the PiP is just gorgeous with those little golden catkins.

Good to see you are getting out and about whilst staying safe etc. Essential for sanity lately!

We went to Uppark House and Gardens (NT), even though the house is closed the garden and grounds are open to the public. There were quite a few people around, but everyone seemed to be keeping an appropriate distance from each other. We took a picnic as well. I even took a few photos :-)) When we got home we spent an hour or so gardening...........I'll sleep well tonight!

Take care.

Thank you Keith. An amazing place that I will be visiting again, I hope!

I passed Stourhead on the way home and there were quite a few people there, but like where you were, they seemed to be keeping a good distance from one another. A picnic sounds a great idea! If I had taken one up this hill, it would have all blown away ;-))

Sleep well and take care.

A great shot of this impressive slope Rosa, hard going but well worth the effort of the climb, considering the glimpse of the view you have shown us. History is all around us on these islands, it only takes a little effort to discover historic sites on our own doorsteps. For example, our local fields and woods on the tabular hills are full of the remains of barrows and dykes. From the background it looks as if the tree in the PiP, fine shot by the way, was on the hill you climbed. The lovely colours of the catkins look great against the green of the backdrop.

Stay healthy down there in Wiltshire, Doug

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Doug Shepherd club
You are right Doug, just a little digging and we find out so much, as you have found yourself. This hill is even higher than it looks in this shot. Some day, when it is not so windy, I will get to the top and walk along the ridge that my brother told me was the A303 of its day!! The catkins did look lovely. They were about half way down, but I could see Stourhead House from that point!

Thank you for all your kind comments and you & your wife stay safe too Doug.
Regards, Rosa.
