The Town Bridge

The Town Bridge
Bradford-on-Avon ~ A bridge was mentioned in the time of Edward II (1307-27), so it was perhaps built early in the 14th century to replace the broad ford that gives the town its name, although perhaps not in the same place and was recorded in 1400. Two arches of that bridge remain, but most of it today dates from an 18th century rebuild and doubling in width.

061 The view
The small building on one of the cut-waters is a 17th century lock-up for holding prisoners until they could be brought before a magistrate. It has been claimed to be a chapel and there might well have been one there before the lock-up replaced it. On top is a fish-shaped weather vane: the Bradford Gudgeon; prisoners were said to be “below the fish and over the water”.

The Weaving Shed.
The Weaving Shed ~ Part of the redevelopment of the mills.

All of your photos are well done, in this light Bradford looks beautiful! I think I have crossed the old bridge but from a distance you can aprreciate it much better.

Yes you have to see the bridge from a distance to appreciate it Gudrun. It would be better if not so much traffic travelled over it, but until they decide the style of a new bridge further out of town, that is the way it will stay, unfortunately. Thank you for your kind comments.

Access is denied to 2&3 again !!! I like the second one of the bridge, the lock up looks posh, there is one at Ticknal ( Derbyshire) which is very basic, I hope you enjoying the lovely weather and your day is so hectic as yesterday, you could sit in the summer house this afternoon enjoy the rest of your day Rosalyn

I cannot understand why that should be Peter. They are both under the picture and PiP's, which I did especially for you. The lock-up is also known as a blind house because it doesn't have any windows. No chance of sitting in the summer house...it's full of my daughter's furniture until she moves into her new cottage. The computer room is full as well!! What it is to be a parent ;-)

I've never been to Bradford-on-Avon...............but it looks like a photographers dream with a great mix of old and new buildings.

I like all three images, but the first Pip is just superb...........it puts the bridge properly in context with the town in the background and the river in the foreground. Just lovely Rosa.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
It really is Keith. I have more yet to come ;-) The only thing that spoils it is that a lot of traffic has to go across the bridge. There was talk of another bridge being built more out of town, but a lot of people didn't seem to like the very modern bridge that was offered. I thought it was beautiful and better than trying to look like the old one. I hope they come to a decision soon.
Thank you for your always kind comments.

Now that the old mill buildings have been redeveloped with a mix of homes and retail, it is back to the vibrant place it used to be. I just wish they would hurry and build a second bridge out of town for all the through traffic!! I am pleased you enjoyed your visit there.

This series is as beautiful as the others...I love the old bridge ! Great light here.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Adele club
If you do ever visit Adele, make sure it is this Bradford (on Avon) as there is a Bradford in Yorkshire, and that is not at all like this one ;-)) Also it's about 200 miles further north ;-))
Thank you for your very kind comments.

The terraced housing serves as a great link from the parapet in the foreground to the beautiful blue and cloudy sky in the back ground.

The first PiP is beautifully composed. The light falling on the bridge is quite sublime. The reeds provide ideal foreground interest. I love the contrast between the natural and the human influence on the landscape.

The architecture in the second PiP is in stark contrast to that depicted in the other two images.

Three lovely images, Rosa.

Cheers,

Joe
