Tithe Barn at Barton Grange

Tithe Barn at Barton Grange
This spectacular mid-14th century monastic stone barn is 51 metres long, with an amazing timber cruck roof. It is one of the country's finest examples of medieval barns - rightly called the 'cathedrals of the land'. It originally formed part of a range of farm buildings grouped around an open rectangular yard. Particularly notable is the late 14th century cruck-built granary which also survives.
It is owned by English Heritage and is free to visit.

The old buildings are really attractive...............the stone they're made from is particularly lovely, especially in the sunshine. Three superb photos Rosa, especially the internal shot, which is perfectly exposed.

It's so nice to be able to just wander around these buildings Keith. The cruck frames are amazing. In 1914 the barn was no longer used by the farm and was saved in the 1950's and various restoration works were done after that. Many thanks for your interest and kind comments.

Hi Peter,

It says it's the longest in England but there is a thatched Tithe Barn in Tisbury, Wiltshire and that seems just as big. I will have to check it out. Thank you for all your kind comments and stars.

Best wishes, Rosa.

I like the interior shot of the amazing woodwork, it would have been full of harvest paid by the peasant farmers. Only the odd glimpse of the sun today but it was mild, enjoy your evening Rosalyn

I haven't visited this (I would have liked to) but remember it from a book I once read about the restoration of mediaeval barns and I thought at one time it was something I would have wantes to get involved with. Alas ...
Love the shots!

Mit sehr viel Baukunst wurde diese alte Scheune aufgebaut, Rosa.
Sehr gut hast Du das Dachkonstruktion hervorgehoben.
Für wieviele Menschen wird sie Güter gelagert haben?
Erinnerungen an " The Pillars of the Earth" von Ken Follett werden wach.
Freundliche Grüße und einen guten Tag

Spectacular photos! It does indeed resemble a church with its buttresses. The mellow stone and the timber roof are beuatiful.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Gudrun club
Thank you so much Gudrun. The Bath stone and Mendip stone is very mellow and still used today in this area. I love to see the wooden cruck frames. All naturally held together.

I love this old-fashioned architecture, Rosa. The exterior shots have lovely cloud formations, and the interior shot has great play between light and shadow. Cheers, Joe
