Vicars' Close ~ Wells

Vicars' Close ~ Wells
With 2 PiPs.

On 30 December 1348, Bishop Ralph made over to the vicars ‘the dwellings newly built and to be erected for the use of the vicars’. The houses were built in two rows running north from the Hall, and were completed by the time of Bishop Ralph’s death in 1363. The quadrangle was finally completed with the building of the Chapel at the north end in the early fifteenth century.

The towering chimney shafts, which are such a delightful feature of the Close, were built to extend the original chimneys possibly because the Vicars were beginning to burn coal instead of wood and taller chimneys were needed to carry away the more pungent smoke.

I am pleased you enjoyed it Amelia. I think most of the cottages are occupied by music teachers at the Cathedral School. I heard someone playing the piano very competently.

I love the perspective, Rosa; especially the diminishing sizes of the receding chimneys. Cheers, Joe

Interesting year 1348 - at the height of the Black Death. I'm surprised they got built at all!
Another fine shot of the Close, Rosa!

It does say in the history of this street that the black death was raging and more than one vicar succumbed to it. Not only did it get built but it has lasted so long in such a good condition, I am very pleased to say.

They are very high Pat. That's what makes them so unique as a street I think.

They certainly knew how to look after themselves in the church! I'm fascinated by the height of the chimneys, they make the perspective stand out so well - great image Rosa.

This is taken from their website Doug, which I will add to the description ~ Down in the Close itself, the towering chimney shafts, which are such a delightful feature of the Close, were built to extend the original chimneys possibly because the Vicars were beginning to burn coal instead of wood and taller chimneys were needed to carry away the more pungent smoke. ~ Thank you very much for your great comments.

Best regards, Rosa.

A wonderful image Rosa. I love the composition here and the detail and colours of the stonework. The cobblestone are lovely too. Beautifully captured.

The PiPs compliment the main picture nicely, providing a much closer look at the architecture.

Thank you for your very nice comments Nouchet. This is a very unusual and unique street that draws many visitors. You got me thinking, so I looked up if it has featured in any films and it has! Too many to list, even a German film :-)

A wonderful image of bygone England. No expense was spared in ensuring the vicar's fire drew well and their cassocks didn't get specks of soot on them !! it seems strange that they are at the front of the roofs not in the centre, did only one room have a fire. They must be Listed so why was that red brick one allowed ??
I hope you are having a nice weekend Rosalyn an the weather is being kind, I was near Peterborough it was quite warm there

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
They were well looked after at that time, that's for sure Peter! I don't think it is red brick, the local stone is very pink/red. I'm afraid I can't answer your query about the chimneys but I will upload a back view of the street, which is not so impressive! A nice weekend so far here :)

It certainly does Gudrun, but it is so good that they are all still lived in. I know I have put this street on here before, but it's one of those places that I can't resist taking more pictures of! :-))

Lovely images, Rosa. I'd pick the buildings as old, but I'm amazed at just how old.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to tiabunna club
It is amazing how old they are. A hundred years after they were built the Bishop reprimanded the vicars for their untidiness and they were ordered to smarten up their houses!

Hi Sarah, thank you for your generous comments. I always have to look at this street when I am in Wells. It's so fascinating and quite busy with children from the Cathedral school walking to lessons up and down the street and into the Cathedral Green. Best wishes, Rosa.

Hi Rosa,

A very nice set of pictures, and very interesting discussion.
I think the answer to the height of the chimneys is very simple, and hinted at by Peter Castell. The chimneys do not emanate from the centre of the roof, therefore to be suitably higher than the peak of the roof, they must be longer!

Best wishes
Peter

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter_Private_Box club
Hi Peter,

Yes, quite right Peter. The fireplace must have been on that front wall, which is unusual as well. It is the chimneys that have made the street that little bit extra interesting. They are certainly a good feature and great to take pictures of. Many thanks for your kind and interesting comments.

Best wishes, Rosa.
