St Laurence's Church ~ Bradford-on-Avon

St Laurence's Church ~ Bradford-on-Avon
St Laurence's Church, Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, is one of very few surviving Anglo-Saxon churches in England that does not show later medieval alteration or rebuilding. The church is dedicated to St Laurence and documentary sources suggest it may have been founded by Saint Aldhelm around 700, although the architectural style suggests a 10th or 11th century date. St. Laurence's stands on rising ground close to the larger Norman parish church of the Holy Trinity. The building was used as a combined school (nave) and cottage (chancel) for many years, both on more than one storey. It was rediscovered in 1856 and restored in 1870–80. In 1952 the church was designated as Grade I listed.

Lovely photos! The light is perfect and it's so good to see the inside too. When we were there a few years ago we had greyish skies and the church was closed:-(

Oh that was a shame Gudrun. The church is rarely closed. Thank you for your kind comments. It makes taking pictures much easier when the weather is so good ;-))

A lovely threesome of this formidable edifice, Rosa. I love the details and the variegated colours in the stonework. Great use of light and shadow too. Cheers, Joe

Thank you very much Joe. It was an impromptu visit, as the weather was so good. I always have to go and see this church when I am in Bradford-on-Avon. I have taken so many photos over the years, but the weather made a great difference this time. Cheers, Rosa.

Well done Rosa! And your PiP's are also very nice. Good to see also the inner side. In the Netherlands, most of the (small) churches are weekly closed. Only on Sunday you can in them.

An amazing story of survival Rosa. The you have captured the detail in the honey coloured stonework very nicely. The the interior shots with the lighting in and around the doorways have a great atmosphere.

Best regards, Doug

It is amazing that the church is now surrounded by houses but still looks really nice and it even has a pleasant back garden. I always find the interior quite breathtaking and atmospheric. Many thanks for your great comments.

Best wishes, Rosa.

A delightful little church...............it looks absolutely splendid under the blue sky and the sunlight has brought out the detail in the stonework beautifully. The PiPs are very nice too, it's always good to see an interior shot as well. I especially like the framing of the image taken from the inside looking out.

As soon as I saw what a lovely day it was I just had to take advantage of it, and where better than B-o-A I thought! Very pleased with your kind comments Keith. It is such an atmospheric and beautiful building. The church you mention looking out on is Holy Trinity which itself is Norman....so pretty old!!

A lovely set of images Rosalyn I like the interior one with the shaft of light and a hint of colour from the stained glass, nothing to distract the worshiper and the pews would have been uncomfortable. A lot of cloud and windy today I hope you have had a good day

Hi Rosa

Really interesting picture, and great information. I guess it must have had 'upstairs' windows at one time. Maybe nice stained glass...

Best Wishes
Peter

Hi Peter,

I'm sure you are right. It was certainly much bigger originally. Thank you for your interest.

Fabulous! Have always loved this venerable church (my period of history at uni) but your interior shots are new to me: at least they are the first of the interior I have really taken notice of! Excellent!

Very pleased to have brought the interior pictures to you Andy. It is a wonderful place to stand inside and look up! It would be good if you could one day visit it. Thanks for your kind comments.
