The 2nd Fagradalsfjall eruption at Meradalir! (03.08.-21.08.2022)

Hallo Gudrun, diesen Ausbruch habe ich im TV verfolgt und daraus sofort geschlossen, dass Du das geahnt hast und deswegen spontan dorthin gereist bist um solche tollen Aufnahmen zu machen... ✌(◕‿-)✌

Thank you so much, Amelia! Oh, a far as volcanoes go, it's a rather harmless one. Locals call this a tourist eruption;-) But sadly there were plenty of idiots around walking in jeans and trainers, rescue services had quite a bit to do (some nationalities don't seem to understand warnings in any language whatsoever....).

I've been following this on our TV and I just knew you'd be there taking photos. These two images are really amazing...........especially considering the conditions you are shooting in! What an experience..!!

I'm impressed with the way the authorities, instead of just banning people from going there, have taken the trouble to provide routes, suggestions and safety advice.

Yes, Icelanders are very pragmatic but idiotic tourists have forced them to introduce restrictions- they close the roads to the parking lots if gas pollution or weather are too bad.

I have seen barriers and signs in several languages (with pictograms) in lots of places in the country where none used to be before. And most car rentals now forbid tourists to use mountain roads even with (smaller) 4x4. Some of the F-roads were therefore nicely empty:-)

There will always be those idiots who spoil things for others........but the Icelandic authorities seem to be controlling things pretty well considering.

Sorry to hear you didn't get as many photos as you would have liked...........but just to be there to witness this amazing event must have been wonderful.

Being able to get there at all was amazing so I'm not complaining too much;-)

Foreign tourists don't understand how vulnerable the icelandic terrain is, and I don't blame them, since it doesn't exactly look like it, whereas the locals do know only too well that if you diverge off-road, it may take 100 years before anything grows there again.

Some genuinely don't know but sadly some just don't care. I do feel ashamed about compatriots who return to Iceland year after year and brag about offroad driving in the highlands....I hope they get caught;-)

Solche Ereignisse 1:1 mitzubekommen ist schon 'was Interessantes, aber auch 'was Beängstigendes!

Herzlichen Dank, Alex! Auf Java ist das sicher wesentlich bedrohlicher, weil es meist explosiv abgeht.... Das hier ist wieder die klassische "Touristeneruption", allein in den ersten 48 Stunden sind schon 10,000 Leute hingepilgert.

Als wir auf Island waren war an unserer Route diesbezüglich gar nichts los.

Auf Java standen wir auf einem Kraterrand und schauten in die brodelnde Masse 'runter. Kollege wechselte Objektiv ... und schwupps, er kam mit einem Objektiv weniger nach Hause ...

Oha, das ist dumm gelaufen! Aber in so einem Moment geht man dem Objektiv nicht hinterher;-)
Ich muss meine Objektive noch austesten, mir hat beim Rückflug jemand den Rucksack aus dem Overhead Locker rausgeschmissen und es gab einen ziemlichen Rumms.... Äußerlich ist alles intakt.

Ne, der stand nur fassungslos da ...

Das rücksichtslose Rausfummeln der Gepäckstücke brachte mich oft an den Rand des Nervenzusammenbruchs.
Habe mir diverse Fotorucksäcke zugelegt, so dass ich meine Ausrüstung unter dem Vordersitz deponieren kann.
Vor der Reise muss ich einfach jedes Mal 'nachschlagen', welche Dimensionen erlaubt sind.

Mein Rucksack ist meist etwas zu unförmig, um ihn bequem unter dem Vordersitz unterzubringen, aber in Hinblick auf die Unversehrheit der Ausrüstung sollte ich in mich gehen.....

Oh, you went over there! After the 2021 eruption in Fagradalsfjall I created an earthquake warning app on my phone, so when the quake swarm started again this summer, I was ready and "happened" to see the very start of the eruption on an MBL webcam. "Gelf" they called this one. Having watched the two eruptions on webcams and chatted about it with all those wonderful geologists, volcanologists and other enthusiastics online for countless hours, I'll definitely need to go there myself some day.

I just happened to be on holiday in Iceland when this one started:-) Instead of Landmannalaugar it was Fagradalsfjall for the last day of our trip. The weather could have been better but at least I saw the fire fountains!
I also watched the webcams and YT videos ever since Holuhraun which started just as I got back from my first trip to Iceland- I have been hooked ever since:-)
I'm sure you'll get the opportunity to see one of the next ones, it's only a matter of time when it will start again....

A tricky place to be here being most dangerous I would have thought. However you made it, like the other people in this shot and managed to capture the feeling of all this. Not so much a pictorial landscape more an action shot and certainly a good record. Well done.
