Askja is a big central volcano in the middle of the Icelandic highlands, consisting of 3 nested calderas. Öskjuvatn (in the background) is Iceland's 2nd deepest lake (220m) and developed in the years/decades after the 1875 eruption when the magma chamber had emptied and the caldera slowly collapsed and filled with groundwater. Viti (Icelandic for hell) in the foreground is a maar, an explosion crater from a phreatic explosion which also happend in 1875. The water is sulphurous and people used to bathe in it. At the moment this is forbidden, as Askja seems to be slowly warming up towards another eruption. There has been an uplift of 35cm in recent times and the alert level has been raised to yellow.

Ach, das gehört zu Island dazu;-) Kam früher in den Hotels aus jedem Heißwasserhahn, weil sie direkt das thermisch erhitze Wasser genommen haben. Da ist beim Duschen der Schmuck schwarz geworden;-) Heute wird meist Quellwasser erhitzt, das nicht "riecht".

Thank you so much, Rosa! The parking lot was full, there was a steady procession of visitors, even though it takes a 4x4 about 5 hours to get there! Some others had built the snowman but our Swiss fellow travellers put the flags there;-)

An awesome panoramic view Gudrun. The light is gorgeous and the tiny people along the top of the crater give a real sense of scale. I like the PiPs too, especially the last one, which made me smile.

It sounds like it might be getting dangerous to visit up there!

Thanks very much, Keith! That sight was worth the slog through mushy snow. It's only 2,4km one way but you walk one step and slide back half a step;-)
Askja can only be visisted for about 2 months (July and August) and it's monitored very closely. The authorties wouldn't hesitate to close off the area if they'd be getting worried. A few roadblocks would suffice!

Thanks a a lot, Isabel! The big camera was out of the question with snow/rain. I had to carry the Q2 under my jacket but that it is weatherproofed helped a lot with the photos.-)
