Gigjökull (Crater Glacier) comes down from the top of Eyjafjalljökull and can be seen from the F-road to Þórsmörk. The photos were taken from the end moraine.
Before the notorious 2010 eruption this was a famous beauty spot with pristine blue-white ice and a glacier lagoon with icebergs swimming in it. After the eruption the lagoon had disappeared, in its place were ash and volcanic debris and the glacier was a black stump. 12 years later it has started to recuperate though there's still plenty of ash.

Herzlichen Dank, Jean-Paul! 2018 war ich auch in Island, dieses Jahr war schon die vierte Reise, man kann süchtig nach der Insel werden! Und dieses Mal waren 2 Orte dabei, wo ich immer schon unbedingt hinwollte: Þórsmörk und Laki:-)

Also wir wollen auch noch mal hin, aber wahrscheinlich nicht mehr in einer Gruppenreise wie 2018, ich schaue mir Þórsmörk und Laki auf jeden Fall mal an!

Ich war 2x mit Erlingsson Naturreisen www.naturreisen.is/reise/georeise-in-island#2 unterwegs, das waren fantastische Routenführungen mit deutschsprachigen isländischen Guides, die im Hauptberuf was ganz anderes machen.
Sowohl Þórsmörk als auch Laki kannst du nur mit großem 4x4 befahren, die Furten sind gefährlich (es lagen abgebrochene Auspuffe und Nummernschilder im und am Fluss;-) und Mietwagenfirmen verbieten oft die F-Straßen selbst bei 4x4. Grundsätzlich sind Schäden durch Flussquerungen nie versichert, das kann im Ernstfall teuer werden.

Ja, zum Klima kommen auch noch Asche dort und Saharastaub bei uns auf den letzten Gletschern. Das wirkt beschleunigend für die Abschmelze.

Danke vielmals, Udo! Hier war es eher die Hitze der Eruption, die dem Gletscher zugesetzt hat, aber generell schmelzen auch die isländischen Gletscher bedenklich schnell ab. Und das wird wiederum mehr Vulkanausbrüche bringen, denn unter allen Gletschern liegen z.T. riesige Vulkane!

Ein prima Dokument zum Zustand der Gletscher, die ja alle vom Klimawandel betroffen sind. Hier ist noch die Vulkanasche dazugekommen und das verstärkt die Wärmeaufnahme und das Abschmelzen des Eises!

Two really dramatic images...........which together with narrative and the link you provided, really shows us how climate change is effecting Iceland. A super bit of reportage..!!

Thanks very much, Keith! I was lazy with the pano and didn't use completely manual settings but MS ICE coped easily with that;-) I just fed the RAWs into the program and tweaked a bit....

Climate change showed itself in reverse this year- as Europe was sweltering under the heat, Iceland had the coldest and worst July since many decades!

Superb pictures Gudrun and great information. I remember that happening in 2010...I think it disrupted a lot of holiday flights! I hope the area does eventually recover its beauty, although it has a certain beauty now.

Thanks a lot, Rosa! Iceland is (geologically) the youngest country in the world so change is just normal, with every eruption we'll see more of it. Icelanders have adapted pretty well and they have some of the best scientists and monitoring in the world- I'd trust their civil protection more than our own;-)

Besten Dank, bk! Ja, an der Vegetation kann man immer gut ablesen, wo der Gletscher wann war. Das Moos ist überall im südlichen Hochland und auf den Ascheflächen gedeiht schnell ziemlich viel (für dortige Verhältnisse;-)

Das war ein Pauschalurlaub, da hat der Reiseveranstalter die Hotels bezahlt.
Eine andere war auf selbstgebuchter Billig-Ryanair-Tour, die musste tief in die Tasche greifen, vor allem weil sie so blöd war, die Fähre nicht zu nehmen, und auf einen Flug gewartet hat- selber schuld!
