Home is where the hearth is.

Home is where the hearth is.
The Sunday Challenge: FLAMES.

There's nothing quite so comforting as an open fire is there? One can sit and watch the ever changing pattern of the flames, make toast, smell the wood smoke and generally sit in glowing comfort. Of course there are downsides. Clearing out the ash, bringing in more coal and logs and resetting the fire. Is it all worth it? We also have a pretend coal, enclosed gas fire in the study (see the blue flames on the pic below). Quick and easy, no mess, no fuss, no bother. Which would you choose?

A fine image Amelia............I can almost feel the warmth from here as I sit staring at my boring radiator :-))

I admit that this open fire has a lot more appeal than a radiator. :-)))

The flame patterns are more entertaining than TV !! although I don't use mine much another plus is being independent if there is a power cut or the boiler fails light the fire

Wir bevorzugen das Gockeln im Freien, auch wenn das Anzünden oft Mühe macht und man wie geräucherter Schinken riecht… Schöne Bilderserie.

I like the no mess version indoors but my local Pub up until it changed hands used to keep an open fire going 24-7, that was comforting, inviting and added to the whole atmosphere of the place. Now managed by a 20 something couple the place is not the same and I have stopped going there.

Very pretty and moody to watch! I like the cozy atmosphere that radiates from an open, crackling fire. The sight of blazing flames has something magical about it.

a very good question, it depends.... when a was a child there were coal fires in every room, I can understand central heating was a big step forward. But for now and then I'd prefer open wood fire

Great flames to that wood fire and I would prefer that ... although one must consider the effects to the environment ... Nice photograph Amelia. :)

Absolutely fabulous! The real thing does look very comfy- if the rest of the room is warm enough. We don't have open fireplaces in town and when pollution is high the use of wood stoves is forbidden (if it's not the only heating).

Sorry folks, our Internet connection has been down for the last 5-6 hours while BT sorted out some phone lines which were down in the village. They said it would be up and running again by 6.30. It's now OK - 15 minutes early. Be with you all soon, after we've eaten and lit the fire.

I would choose the music first - always been fond of The Doors. Then out of nostalgia and sentiment the wood fire. But it seems that these really are incredibly carcinogenic and so it would have to be the rather soulless pretend fire (at least they can look decent enough these days compared to the ones I remember as a child!)

P.S: I actually like all the task what one has to do before and after ;-) Especially chopping wood is very relaxing. And also cleaning the fire place is somehow a task that puts all other stressful things away from the mind. I once lived in an apartment where we had a fire place. And I do miss it a lot!

A beautiful image. Open fires remind me of my childhood when we had no money, no firelighters and poor quality coal. In winter I came home from school to a frozen house and had to light the fire with paper and cinders. My mother was widowed and out working. I don't think I've lit a fire since. Even my pretend fire isn't on much. I love my central heating and try to mitigate the environmental effects by lots of insulation, keeping it well serviced an using a green energy supplier. I feel a bit guilty as I could have solar panels but haven't done it yet.

nicely done, like the circle of hearth surrounding the flames. For me it's a real log fire every time, even if it is a bit of a hassle fetching in the logs in bad weather

We have the same here, Anna. Both propane and also a wood stove. I like them both but nothing really beats the appeal of a wood fire for me. The smell, the sounds, the sight and the warmth.

What a beautiful image and of course the song is perfect. :)
