Fire glow

Fire glow
Taken near our home. The foreground lighting from the street lamp behind me, the red glow from the nearby bushfire (at this stage about 8km away and being held back by fire crews). The morning after this image, as suggested by the Rural Fire Brigade, we left with some of our possessions as there is a risk the only access road could be cut by fire. We are now safe, but over the next few days are hoping to make a quick return visit to retrieve more items to safety in case the fire should come through - it is still out of control and over 73,000 ha at present (see PiP).

I shall be very infrequent on ipernity, but would like to extend my very real appreciation to all who have sent their messages of support for me and my wife. In these worrying times, believe me it does help. :-)

As your friends here have said above -thank God that you are safe. I hope your possessions all escape the fire and that you your friends and neighbours are OK too. Those firemen have a rel job on their hands. I know when we had big moorland fires near us that it is a very worrying time.
-Great photo by the way. Herb

Our property is now safe and we are staying with our daughter waiting for the road home to be reopened in a few days. The volunteer firefighters all deserve medals for the time and effort they've made. What is frightening is that we're just entering summer in drought conditions.

What an ordeal. In the summer we sometimes get smoke from fires many miles away and it's so scary to think of having to evacuate the area. I guess it's good to have a plan in place.

Hopefully things will settle down now. Hoping for some rain for you.

We watch the devastation that the bush fires are causing on the BBC news site. Thank goodness the weather seems to be in your favour now, George. I hope that you can soon return home safe and sound. watching the fire crews makes one realise how devastating fires like this can be. They are very brave men and women.

Many thanks indeed, Janet. These fires are unprecedented: we're in the middle of probably the worst drought on record and all the country is tinder dry. The fires now have burned over 2 million ha, the nearest to us is over 86,000 ha. Fortunately it has been stopped near our area and we could return home, which we plan to do in a few days. Neither we nor our house are in danger at present. That said, the fires will continue to be a concern until there is good rain - and no sign of that happening until into next year.

I'm so relieved...I've been so worried. It is very close to home when this is something I've lived through...I'm so glad the fire has been stopped in your direction. Same thing for us when it happened. We are so lucky.

tiabunna club has replied to ©UdoSm club
Thank you very much, Udo. Australia has a fairly hot and dry climate, so droughts are not unusual. The worry is that the temperatures in recent years are increasingly high and this drought is probably the worst for much of the country. All entirely consistent with climate change, though our current government has problems accepting that.
