This was taken ten years ago. I think I was attracted in large part by the incongruity of the happy figures and the chains. Today, though, I am struck by the relevance of the issue of cultural appropriation. To my mind the problem is not appropriation but mockery, stereotyping, and misuse, and this view strikes me as relevant to a discussion of those issues.

So this has doubled the number of the photos I have taken over the years that actually has an idea in it that I'm aware of, even if I didn't put it there.

The title I first used for this was Buddha in Chains, George, so great minds do think alike. Don't know if it's a buddha, though. A good weekend to you, too. I see yours will start in about thirty seconds.

Kitsch. Of, as you point out, a rather offensive kind. It almost isn't worth pointing out that the petunias belly out (pun intended) to match the nearest Buddha, making it, to me, a bit more grotesque. Pfah.

According to Google Street View, Bob, only one of the figures remained in July 2018. They have never been replenished, so they pretty much seem to have had little market appeal. The petunias are gone.
