1759 Ecliptopera silaceata (Small Phoenix)

1759 Ecliptopera silaceata (Small Phoenix)
Geometridae, Larentiinae - Wingspan: 26-34mm.

A quite variable common species in Cornwall, where the loops joining the inner and outer bars are present or absent to varying degrees often making this species look totally different if unexpected. This is the "no-loop" version, looking like another of the "Banded Carpets" . However, it can take some time before you realise that you are looking in the wrong place for its identity. This version plus a half loop version is often seen in the trap populations, always ready to catch the unwary!

The flight season is from April to September, with two generations overlapping. Peaks occur in May and August.
