Dorchester, Dorset.

Dorchester, Dorset.
High Street East leading to High Street West, once the main shopping thoroughfare of Dorchester but now that is located in the pedestrianised South Street. The shops now in this street are mostly sole traders. There are also many cafes, pubs and take-aways.

Apparently a raddle is a device which holds a colour marking device on rams.

The top image is very well composed, Rosa. The road acts as a lead-in line to draw the eye to the two spires.

The wool shop looks very twee. I wonder if anyone goes in thinking the shop sells fudge. LOL.

I am not an expert on animal husbandry, but I think a 'raddle' in Scotland is called a 'keel'.

Cheers,

Joe

Thank you for your kind comment n the main shot Joe.
Knitting is not a dying art in Dorchester, it would seem!
I didn't know it was called a raddle and now I also know it is a keel in Scotland. We learn something new every day!
Cheers, Rosa.

The lack of shoppers could be anywhere, I can see a few for sale or rent, no doubt there are a few charity shops !! two cafes closed in Leicester last weekend owned by the same Italian family they opened 82 years ago but could no longer make it pay. I hope you are enjoying the sunshine and watching the weeds grow !!! Enjoy the rest of your day Rosalyn p.s.the pub sign and the shop go well together

Wednesday is Market Day in Dorchester, so it was very busy in the main thoroughfare. I would think this street is busier in the evenings with so many pubs and restaurants. A lot of work going on restoring a large and very old Inn that is featured in a Thomas Hardy novel, called The White Hart, so I am looking forward to seeing it finished.
Have a good new week Peter.

I drive past Dorchester every time I visit my family in Exmouth, but rarely stop there except for a cuppa and a break from driving. Judging from these photos I may have to make more of an effort next time.

I like the main image Rosa...........it's very well composed with the natural leading line of the road and you've captured the buildings in great detail. The diffused light is quite lovely too. I'm amazed at how little traffic there is - every time I've ventured in there it's been rammed!

I like the two images in the PiPs too - the wool shop has a beautiful frontage and a great name.

Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum & Dorset County Museum are great places to visit if you ever have more time there Keith. Of course there is Thomas Hardy's Cottage close by as well, which I love and have been to a few little music gatherings there. I find though that the best places in the town are quite well hidden, and I'm still finding them!

Thank you for your very nice comments on the main picture. It was actually very busy with traffic. I struck lucky this time! Thank you also for your valued comments on the PiP's too.

FANNNNNNNNNNNNNTASTIC!!! I adore your village photography, you really are so good at getting attractive and interesting angles and honing in on cool signs and window displays. This sereis is just great and makes me feel as if I am there. Thank you for the stroll and wonderful show. :)

Thank you for your great comments Janet....I had better tell you though that it's not a village and is in fact the County Town....just in case anyone from there sees this ;-)) Dorset is one of the very few counties that doesn't have a city or a motorway in it.
All the best and have a great new week ahead.

A lovely street scene, Rosa. Look at all those chimney pots. I can remember we had open fires in the bedrooms, and these were lit when someone was ill in bed. They weren't lit if it was just freezing weather though. ;-)

A great series, Rosa. The main street scene has a timeless feeling, with the relative absence of traffic. FWIW raddle marking is also the term used here, though I've never seen it applied to a pub. :-)

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to tiabunna club
Thank you George. Actually I was quite lucky as it is a busy through road, which is a shame as there are some lovely little shops and buildings.

I have to admit, I know the implement but didn't know it was called a raddle!
