West Bay ~ Sea Defence Work.

West Bay ~ Sea Defence Work.
The beach defences protect 148 residential properties, 112 commercial properties and caravans.Waves over-topping the Esplanade at West Beach caused significant flooding of properties and utilities in 2014. Each winter, stormy seas damage East Beach. To address this, a more robust defence against flooding and risk of breaching is needed. Large stones were delivered by barges to the beaches in April with a lot of spectator interest.

Anyone thinking of visiting West Bay, there is a lot to see and do despite the work, which in itself is very interesting.

These beach defences are necesary everywhere, unfortunatelly !
So, many beaches are threatened by erosion..
All the best

Interesting to see. The village I used to live in had sea defences like this built a few years ago and Kirkcaldy esplanade has been renewed but it will be impossible to do this everywhere. I think some of the fishing villages on the Forth will suffer.

It is a big problem Jean and I wish there was a perfect solution. That is sad when the problem is merely moved to another nearby part of the coastline.

NATURE CAN'T BE BEATEN. ITS BEEN PROVED IN THE PAST THIS KIND OF REPARATION SIMPLE DOES NOT STAND THE TEST OF TIME.

Lovely looking place so very well captured here in this series; despite "Bob the Builders" best efforts. All in a good cause though.

I hope the new defences will hold for a while bur if I had a property there I'd try to sell while I could still get a decent price for it....I recently read about Fairbourne (near Barmouth) where they already set a date to evacuate the inhabitants.

I don't think I would buy a property too close to the sea Gudrun! Yes I heard about Barmouth on the news. The locals are not very happy about it! Like you, I hope the new defences work as they are costing a lot of money.

I really like the progression of colours in this image, from the rocks on the beach to the green fields beyond. Ocean encroachment is a worldwide issue it seems.

It does seem to be a world wide problem George unfortunately. I cliffs in West Bay have been unstable for a long time...I wouldn't walk under them!! Many thanks for your kind comments.
