A Determined Jackdaw!

A Determined Jackdaw!
The Jackdaws have been a little bit of a nuisance lately, taking the feeders down and eating everything in them, so I have stapled the feeders to the bird stand. This one is even under the table! It was quite amusing watching its determination to get the last of the fat ball out.......Just below was the clever robin taking all the fallen crumbs!! With PiP.
All taken through a window.

I like this presentation Rosalyn it helps to tell a story, they really are adventurous aren't they, as you say they can be greedy. I've cracked the problem for the larger birds by wiring two hanging baskets together like a football with a ground feeder tray inside. Up to the size of a Blackbird can get in and out but nothing bigger. I do put a bit of food out as the bigger birds still need food and the Robins and Dunnocks clean up on the ground with no waste what so ever.

That is a very good idea Maurice. I had a squirrel proof feeder that did a similar job, but the big birds got it off the hook and the ceramic bottom broke. I also feed them in a different part of the garden but they are greedy....I can't help liking them though :)

That's made me laugh. I have starlings who try to perch on the birdfeeders and get at the sunflower seeds. They can do it with difficulty and make me smile.

They usually find a way Jean ;-) I love watching the birds and have been trying to get a picture of a thrush that has started visiting, but no luck yet!

Hi Rosa

A very beautiful set of photos of this bird, the totality of which tells the story of his greed!

I friend of mine recently got a garden bird feeder, the perch of which moves away under the weight of a big bird, but remains in place for the little ones. I must say I've never seen it in action to send the big ones away!

best wishes
Peter

Hi Peter,
I have never seen a bird feeder like you explain! How interesting! I don't mind feeding the big birds but when they come en masse, then the small birds don't come. I would like to keep a happy medium :-))
Thank you for your very nice comments.
Best wishes, Rosa.

Superb shots, Rosa!
It got me thinking; have I a seen a bird feeder in Spain? And the answer is 'no!' .
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Andy Rodker club
Thank you Andy. I think we have a different attitude and there is a big bird count every year, which I think is a good thing and keeps a check on which ones are thriving and find the answer to the birds that are not.
Andy Rodker club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
But on the other hand I have seen many birds in cages here! The Spanish would say that is because they love birds. My response, were I to give it, would be unprintable!!!

Lovely series this Rosa, great shots all. Been having similar problems with both Carrion Crows and Jackdaws. I'm working on a cunning plan to reduce the amount of food that they take at the expense of the small birds;-)

Have a good Sunday

Nice little series and story Rosa. I've got over the problem by hanging some of me feeders well inside the bushes, whilst others are more exposed. The squirrels get their fair share, but the pigeons struggle and usually only get the grounded seed. We had one pigeon that learnt to hand upside down from the top of the feeder and feed out of the bottom apertures ~ very ungainly
5 years ago.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Nick Weall club
That is a good idea and my neighbour tends to do that. I like to see them from the kitchen window though. One pigeon here is so fat he would never be able to hang upside down....but the jackdaw has a very good go!! Pleased you like the series, thank you.

The story of a hungry Jackdaw, nicely captured Rosa, I have the same hassle with the starlings they raid everything in sight and poop on the car at the same time Grrrrrrr! Have not seen the Wren in the garden this year! Hope you are keeping well. Best Wishes, Bill

Well captured Rosalyn, I gave up on feeding the birds whatever I did the tree rats destroyed the feeders, the wood pigeons are always pecking at something but unlike the allotment they don't do any damage in the garden. I'm buying rat 'food' at the moment they are in the compost bin again :(((
5 years ago.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
I have had a few destroyed feeders myself but I try to be one step ahead...not really working though! Whatever we grow in the garden, there is always something that wants to eat it before we do!

Yes, Rosalyn. More and more big birds are coming in my garden too doing some damages sometimes. I can't really blame them. Like me you probably hear all that humans are doing to the planet and to the birds more especially. Still this morning I was hearing about that at the radio once again.
Sometimes I am under the impression that my garden is one of the last places in the world where they can eat and live peacefully... Fortunately there are still some people like you. Thank you.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Christiane ♥.•*¨`*•✿
We must keep on trying Christiane. There does seem to be a little more urgency in saving the planet now. Unfortunately certain heads of state don't care! I remember seeing your beautiful garden and like me you encourage the butterflies and bees with the right colours and plants.
All the best,
Rosa.

Such a appealing trio of pics..............which reflect the problems I have with my own bird feeders. Jackdaws in particular, are especially tenacious! Brilliantly captured and presented.

I bought a "squirrel proof" bird feeder once. This was the outcome: www.ipernity.com/doc/keithburton/19692477/in/album/364095
5 years ago.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
That link is so funny Keith!! Every squirrel proof or big bird proof feeder I have had either doesn't work or is broken by them! If I stand by the patio door the jackdaws fly away, but as soon as I am gone....you know what happens!!

I am pleased you like the trio. They had to be of some use to me with all the food they eat ;-))
I am still going to look out for some fabulous new invention that will stop them....I may be looking for a long time!
