St Nicholas's Church ~ Moreton

St Nicholas's Church ~ Moreton
Moreton, Dorset ~ One of the most beautiful churches I have visited with the biggest attraction being the exquisite windows engraved by Laurence Whistler over the period of 1958-1984. T.E.Lawrence, also known as Lawrence of Arabia is buried in the churchyard.

That's nice to hear John. I didn't really want to drag myself away from the place. There were many more engraved windows than I have shown and all so beautiful.

Best wishes, Rosa.

I took my Dorset Churches book of the shelf this morning and it was that which reminded me of this place. I am definitely going to visit again this year. I hope you do someday visit it Nick.

Amazing small world Rosalyn, I have a small water colour given to me by my landlord dated 1929 of a desert scene and the pyramids, How my landlord came by the painting I don't know but I remember when the film "Lawrence of Arabia" was released I went to see the film with him who later revealed that he was one of Lawrence's bodyguards during the Arab uprising.

It really is a small world Maurice. What an interesting story. I cannot understand why I didn't take a photo of Lawrence's grave. I will do that the next time I visit, which I hope will be quite soon.

Thank you so much Sarah. The windows really did take my breath away, especially with the sunlight shining through and it's a very light church due to all the windows.

How lovely! I don't think I've ever seen a church with engraved windows like this one.

This image is very well composed and I like that you've used the gravestones as foreground interest. The stonework is a gorgeous colour and I really like the shape of the roof and tower! Beautifully captured Rosa.

The interior details in the PiPs are magnificent..........you've exposed the shots perfectly. I particular like the last PiP as is shows the most engraving.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
I was going to say, neither have I Keith, then I remembered that on my recent trip to Mere, which is just up the road, a lady pointed out an area of engravings and I did photograph them, so will look them out soon. Nowhere near the scale or quality of the ones in Moreton Church though.

Thank you very much for your kind comments. There was one window that could only be seen outside and the subject of it has caused some controversy in the past, but I won't say more as I do intend to visit again soon, so will take a photo of it and hope it turns out better than the one I have at the moment.

A stunning collection of images Rosa. The composition of the exterior of the church is spot on with a great perspective. For me the interior shots steal the show; your captures of the windows are second to none with wonderful detail and magnificent light and colours.

I love this stunning architecture, Rosa. The interior and exterior of the church are equally spectacular. The pointed arches and tracery of the windows are magnificent. In your main photograph, the gravestones provide the ideal foreground interest. I am not surprised you say this is one the most beautiful churches you have visited. You have recorded beautifully, in this series of photographs, the splendour of this formidable edifice. Cheers, Joe

I was blown away by the exterior and interior Joe, and the windows I couldn't stop looking at. As I mentioned to Keith there is a controversial window that I will try to get a better picture of than I did on this occasion when I visit in the near future. Thank you for your very kind comments. Cheers, Rosa.

Roselyn, this presentation rocks my world! :D

First of all, the main picture is just breathtaking. Super pov, the clouds in the sky enhance the beauty of the church. The architecture is lovely to admire and the setting is so lovely and peaceful.

The interior shots are fantastic!! The windows and their decor are gorgeous. Super photography to capture them so nicely. The first inset is exquisite...the lovely details of the window and above them, the gorgeous wood for the pews, the whole scene...it's just so pretty. And the etching on the windows is something I don't remember ever seeing before in a church. I really love it.

I stopped to turn my monitor to my husband so that I should share them with him and together we oohed and ahhed over each picture. All of them are so super. Steve loved the main image so much and talked about the architecture with great admiration. He loved all the insets just as much.

We can see why you felt it was one of the prettiest churches you've seen in a while...what an elegant, beauty of a church! Thank you so much for the wonderful show! :)

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Janet Brien club
Sorry I missed your comment Janet. A bit of a late reply! I thank you and your husband for your kind and generous comments. I am not particularly religious, but I do find church architecture very enjoyable. This church, however, had such a wonderful atmosphere that it was difficult not to be moved by such beautiful windows. I am taking my daughter there once winter is over, so hope to show more of their amazing windows.....Rosa.
