Thanks a lot, Isabel! This was on full frame. You need the widest and brightest ultra wide angle you can get and you'll often find it's not wide enough;-) Also take your sturdiest tripod as it's going to be windy. In winter conditions spikes for both your tripod (very useful) and your shoes (essential!) are a good idea. Shoe spikes is one of the things provided in the list of what we should take... but spikes for the tripod I dont have it mentionned, I will look for it then. I think I have spikes in one of my tripods, both have a hook to hand weigh on them and stabilize.
I was intending just to take the 24-70 f.2.8 nikon zoom but will add my zeiss 15mm f/2.8 ... and for the Leica I have a zeiss 21mm f/2.8 that usually does a great job...
I also take plastic bags to put the gear in before going back to the warmth to prevent moist and mould inside...

Good one your tripods has spikes, it does help to anchor it. You'll find that the Zeiss will do a great job for auroras. With a prime it's much easier to focus on infinity, usually it's where the scale says infinity - which isn't so with zooms! But in any case, try the infintiy focusing in daylight and mark the spot if it's somewhere unexpected.
Yes, plastic bags are useful when it's really cold, don't be tempted to look at your photos before the morning;-)

I had the experience in the Faroe... now I know better how to protect myself and the gear! And even have thin rubber gloves for touching metallic parts...

Wow, I didn't think of rubber gloves! I'm using thin microfibre (under)gloves plus windproof ones where you can remove the top over the fingertips.

You could do without the tele but not without the wideangle. I usually take a 70-200 if I don't have to carry it for too long but find that I don't take many photos with it. There won't be so very many opportunities for photographing animals and except for a few hours around noon you'll be struggling with low light. If you've got a stabilizer on your 300 and want to go whalewatching it might be worth it.

I asked our group leader too and he thinks I wont use it that much... and we are not going for whales so... thanks for your view on this, all advises and tips are welcome!
Am not so sure I will carry the nikon, maybe the leicas will do... still 40 days to think it over!!!!!!

Herzlichen Dank, Berny! Die Nordlichtansagen kann man je nach Wunsch ein- oder ausschalten.
Stativ ist auch auf dem Schiff besser, beim Auflegen auf die Reling vibriert's und ohne kannst eh vergessen;-) Hier war's gerade sehr ruhig zwischen 2 Inseln, ein paar Minuten später war's vorbei. da hat das Stativ im Wind gewackelt;-)

Another seriously impressive image, both artistically and technically, great.

Re the infinity focus at night, I sometimes pre-set the lens in the light and then tape the focus ring to the lens body so I can't knock it out of focus in the dark.

Good idea with the tripod spikes.

Yes, taping the focus is a good idea! Luckily with the Samyang infinity is exactly where the distance ring stops and the Irix I use now you has a lock mechanism which is very handy.

Eine solche Ansage hätte mich tatsächlich auch aus dem Bett geholt, Gudrun, was sonst nur ein Feueralarm schaffen würde ;-). Für die Belichtungszeit von 2.5 sec. auf einem schwankenden Schiff ist das Firmament und auch das Festland erstaunlich "scharf".
