ICE-SAR at Nýidalur

ICE-SAR at Nýidalur
Icelandic search and rescue superjeeps at Nýidalur. Close by is a notorious ford on Sprengisandur highland road. The 4x4 hire car on the left would never have been able to cross if the water hadn't been very low that day and even so they needed one of the volonteers in superjeeps to guide them across. The people driving the car were in shorts and flip-flops and quickly hopped in again after realizing how cold it was;-)

Superjeeps der isländischen Rettungsgesellschaft in Nýidalur. Ganz in der Nähe ist eine berüchtigte Furt auf der Sprengisandur-Hochlandpiste. Der 4x4 Mietwagen links wäre niemals drübergekommen, wenn der Wasserstand nicht so niedrig gewesen wäre und selbst da brauchten sie einen der Freiwilligen im Superjeep, der sie rüberlotste. Die Insassen des PKWs waren in kurzen Hosen und Flipflops und verschwanden wegen der Kälte des Hochlands schnell wieder ins Auto.

I hope the car occupants gave a good donation to the ICE-SAR organisation. I cannot imagine why they only had flip-lops and shorts on. Climate control in cars can lead to a false sense of security.

Thanks a lot, Amelia! I'm sorry to say the occupants seemed to be British and didn't donate anything, just used the toilets;-) They shouldn't have attempted the road in this sort of car at all. If they had got stuck they'd have been in for an unpleasant surprise because rental car insurance doesn't cover water damage and damage to the bottom of the car...

Schönen Dank, Dida! Das sind alles Freiwillige, die da teilweise wegen irgendwelchen Idioten ihr Leben riskieren! Und genau die werden oft auch noch pampig...
Einmal mussten sie im WInter ein und dieselbe Gruppe von englischen Oberklassen-Kids mehrfach retten, weil die trotz entsprechender Hinweise meinten, ihre Hochlanddurchquerung fortsetzen zu müssen...

Ja, davon können meine "Feuerwehrler" auch ein Lied singen - aber letztens hat doch tatsächlich mal einer angerufen und sich für einen Einsatz bedankt und er wollte auch mal vorbei kommen und sich das Gerätehaus ansehen.

Danke, poly! Nee, die Shorts und Flipflops waren in dem kleinen PkW;-) Die Jungs vom Rettungsdienst waren hochlandtauglich gekleidet. Dort oben auf 830m unterhalb vom Gletscher habe sogar ich gefroren...

Ganz sicher, der Patrol war und ist noch immer ein Kraftpaket mit hervorragenden Eigenschaften. Und rechts der Landcruiser auch. Es ist nur immer herrlich, wenn auf der Königsallee in D'dorf feine Herren mit Pferdelederschuhen aus solchen Autos aussteigen und sich schnell bei Starbucks einen Kaffee holen... :-))) Gibt es tatsächlich! Dort oben werden sie halt gebraucht!

In der Stadt gehören die sowas von besteuert.... bzw.ganz raus;-) Die Herren in Pferdelederschuhen müsste man mal zur Flussdurchquerung schicken;-)
In Island werden die DInger ja immer noch umgebaut, die bekommen ein Lastwagenchassis und oben drauf kommt dann das, was drauf steht;-)

Thanks a lot, Rosa! Icelanders "invented" this sort of vehicle because the usual ones couldn't cope with icelandic conditions. They use the chassis of a lorry and put the 4x4 on top.

Those search and rescue vehicles are real beasts..........and I love the close up shot..!! I'm constantly amazed that despite all the warnings and advice people still go out into the wild with inappropriate equipment and dress..............and then expect others to take risks to rescue them.

Thank you, Keith! These are the only sort of vehicle that get to grips with conditions in the highlands, they are especially adapted. I'd need a ladder to get into one;-) Some people just choose to ignore advice... If there's a sign "Impassable" plus a roped off road they drive around and say they don't understand English (and cannot read the signs)...

Vielen Dank, Leo! Im Hochland weiß man nie... Dieses Jahr kam der WIntereinbruch schon im September, seither sind alle Hochland-Pisten geschlossen. ICE SAR fährt aber meines Wissens trotzdem Patrouille.
