Bosigran and Commando Ridge

Bosigran and Commando Ridge
A famous Cornish sea-cliff climbing area. I am on top of the main cliff at Bosigran, looking across to Commando Ridge, a pioneering route first climbed in the 19th century by the Abrahams; sister and brother (not the spiky islet but the jagged headland beyond). I climbed it, and also a few climbs on the main face of Bosigran with the university climbing club, many years ago! For some decades this was an SAS training ground, hence the name of the climb.

It's OK. Most people who are just visitors, not climbers, take the easy paths that are at the bottom.

Craggy, jaggy and very beautiful in the sunshine. Must be very wild and dramatic in a gale.

I'm sure it has been done many times and it doesn't look difficult at all! It's just that when you get to the end you either dive off and swim back (not recommended here) or climb back the way you came!

Easy to see how t his would be a popular part of the coast for the climbing fraternity - and especially a bootneck training area!

A stunning view and superb shot Andy!

Thanks, Keith. You'll have to explain bootneck!
Keith Burton club has replied to Andy Rodker club
A Bootneck or Bootie, is the services slang word for a Royal Marine - there are lots of ideas as to where the name came from but the most accepted one is that during the 18th Century it was common for soldiers to wear a leather collar, called a stock, under their tunic or shirt collars, to keep their chins up. Some people thought the stock looked like the top of a boot fastened round the neck.

Ah, climbing days--ha sido muchos años, ¿no? ;)

I climbed here between 1977 and 1983, Steve. Firstly with my mate from France (school exchange) whose older brother was an excellent rock climber and who taught us the basics in the early 70s in the south of France. Then the university climbing club came here on two weekends and the last time was with the graduates version of the London University mountaineering Club. But since then, only hill walking and scrambling. The last rock climb I ever did was in 1987 in the Lake District. Lives diverged, a sad, fatal accident to one of the stalwarts of our group knocked the stuffing out of the essence of our group and that was that.

Very sorry to hear about that. I just drifted away from climbing, and now I don't have the balance.
Andy Rodker club has replied to slgwv club
I would have continued but like you, I just drifted away once my climbing friends lost heart. I was then stuck in London for many years without the wherewithal to get into the mountains and now that I am Spain I tried to make up for lost time in the early years. Not so much now due to health reasons but I hope to get back there more regularly this year. That is why you see a preponderance of photos form the first half of this decade!
