Abbotsbury Monastery Remains.

Abbotsbury Monastery Remains.
Some time ago I came across a Victorian photograph (PiP) and recognised the location immediately. It took me a while to find a photo that I had taken from a similar spot. I hadn't realised it was as long ago as 2013! The 2nd PiP is St Catherine's Chapel, high on a hill next to the monastery remains.

001 Abbotsbury.

018-2 St Catherines Chapel.

Abbotsbury housed a Benedictine community founded in 1044 by Orc, a house steward of King Cnut. Its layout probably followed the normal Benedictine pattern of that time, with the monastic buildings grouped around a cloister to the south of the church.

I love the framing and the ancient architecture, Rosa. The curve of the arch complements well the triangular shape of the gable-end. Cheers, Joe

The arch provides a lovely fame for the monastery , it made me curious as to how many there were between 800 and 900 were dissolved which would have housed around 12,000 people most towns of any size would have had at least one. A belated Happy Birthday Rosalyn

Thank you Peter. A lot of parts of Abbeys and Monasteries in this area. It would be good to do a series of them. Have a good Tuesday.

Qué reportaje tan curioso. Transcurridos bastantes años los elementos siguen ahí desafiando la erosión del tiempo; ahora con el arco adornado de trepadoras. El monasterio se conserva y la fotografía lo muestra bien.

It is good that some thing don't change Jose. I would love to know the name of the photographer who took the old photo. On some I have found their name was printed along the bottom, bu they were mostly postcard type pictures.

Hi Rosa

A very nice picture, and a place I now recognise!!
As you know I visited there summer 2019, and have a photo from exactly the same spot! (not on ipernity though).

The ivy is gone, and the fence is looking a bit tatty, but otherwise the same!!!!

Best Wishes, a nice week, and stay safe!!
Peter

Hi Peter,

Yes I remember your trip to Abbotsbury and I have photos very similar to the ones you left me a link for....I think must all see the same photo opportunities :-))

Next spring I hope it will be possible to go to the village again and I would also like to visit the Swannery. Did you go past the Tropical gardens, down to Chesil Bank on your visit?

Take care and best wishes,
Rosa.

Hi Rosa,,

Thanks for the comprehensive reply.. Perhaps great minds do think alike!!

I did go to the tropical gardens directly after the Swannery (only pausing briefly at the beach). While in the gardens took a walk up the hill.. www.ipernity.com/doc/2247998/48897616

It would be nice to go and see the young swans next year.. virus permitting!!

Best Wishes, a nice weekend, and stay safe!!

Another fine collection Rosa. The main shot is superb and combined with the Victorian image of a similar scene is of great interest. The photographer of the day has created a lovely composition with the two young girls in the foreground. I wonder what Victorian photographers would make of our digital cameras!

Thank you very much for your great comments Doug. I also wonder what my father would have made of our digital cameras. He was a keen photographer and used to do wedding photography as a side line when we were young. Sadly he died just before they were becoming widely available. That along with a computer and printer...he would have been well away!

All the best, Rosa.
