Miracles Do Happen ...

Miracles Do Happen ...
For this week's Sunday Challenge which had the theme of green landscapes.

As I've not been able to get out much with the camera this week I took a dip into the archives and came up with this shot, which was taken at Beamish Open Air Museum earlier in the year.

The church you see here is, or at least was, St. Helen's the old Parish church of Eston, Middlesbrough, and it dates back to the 12th Century. However, by 1998, with the church having been disused for around 15 years and it having been partially demolished by local vandals it was in a very sorry state.

So, despite it being a Grade II listed building, permission was granted for its demolition and it appeared then that its fate was sealed ... that was until Beamish stepped in at the last moment to rescue the church for preservation.

They carefully deconstructed it stone by stone so that it could be rebuilt on the Museum site in County Durham next to Pockerley Old Hall, which can be seen behind the church high up on the hill.

Some of the bricks still have numbers written on them, which I can only assume have been left to illustrate how the Beamish team were able to reconstruct the church exactly as it had been when it stood in Eston, albeit now fully refurbished and fitted out with replacement fittings including some beautiful Georgian pews.

Please view on black for best effect.

Great job. As usual I enjoy you write ups. I also had to resort to my archives to come up with a green landscape. But I did so for a different reason. ;-)

There's something about the English countryside along with the long, long history of the country. Thanks for adding another piece of history regarding St. Helen's old Parish Church. Such precise green lines to the left of the image. The landscape with the brick play nicely together. Just lovely Paul. thank you :) Like that they left the #'s on the brick.

Yes, it is quite an achievement Wendi ... amazing what you can do when you're determined to achieve it! :)

There was an old farmhouse beside where I grew up, it was a beauty. The old couple died (I hope not in the house) no family.. so the city sold it for $1.00 and the buyer had a specific amount of time to move it.. well he did, it took him years to rebuild it and he did so on my in-laws road. I still get to see the house I grew up beside every time we make the 'trek' home. I have often thought about knocking on his door... "hi I used to live beside this house can I look around?" then I think that would just be creepy so I never have.

A fascinating story Wendi, but I think you did right to hold back ... I mean we wouldn't want people to think you were in any way weird! ;)

What a brilliant project...........and a very successful outcome by the look of it. The church is quite beautiful............and it's a shame that it should have been allowed to get into such a state in the first place!

A wonderfully detailed and well composed image too Paul..!!
autofantasia club has replied to Keith Burton club
Yes, quite an amazing feat on behalf of the Beamish team and they stuck at it by all accounts Keith despite it taking a few years to secure the funding to complete the project.

I imagine though that the way our society is going there will be many more churches left to fall into disrepair and Beamish won't be able to save them all sadly! :(

hättest Du nicht noch ein wenig nach links gehen können, um mehr von dem wunderschönen, grünen Feld links ins Bild zu bekommen, Paul?
aber das war ja am 24.03.17 nicht das Thema ...
6 years ago. Edited 6 years ago.
autofantasia club has replied to christel.k club
Not quite sure that the translation of your comment makes sense Christel unless you're seeking to emphasise what I've already stated ... that for this particular challenge I used an image from the archives.
6 years ago. Edited 6 years ago.
christel.k club has replied to autofantasia club
