Storks (PiP)

Storks (PiP)
The Sunday Challenge (TSC): BIRDS/BIRD -Living birds, not dead or ornaments

These wild storks made our zoo "Wilhelma" their home. They enjoy the easy life with abundant food- it remains to be seen whether they will migrate to Africa in the winter. Their predecessor stayed here because she had an injured leg and got used to the comfort of her surroundings ( the silly thing once foraged for food in the middle of a big road and got hit by a car...). If you look hard you can see sparrows bottom left- they build their nests underneath the storks' nest!
Inset a wider view of the building with the nest on top.

Other wild birds living in "Wilhelma" include cormorants, grey herons, mallards (see second inset), Coots and a large number of the usual birds found in parks and gardens.

You really hit the jackpot, Gudrun! What beautiful photos (the one with the building is so pretty with great shadows.) Really nice work. :)

Thanks a lot, Karen! I went there in the morning and counted on finding plenty of wild birds in the zoo. In the end the problem was one of choice;-)

Great shots. I once saw a couple of storks at a stop on the Autobahn. Both of them walked around and got biscuits from people. They were far too used to people.

Many thanks, Harriet! This is indeed a bit of a problem, mostly it is birds who were injured and so got used to people.

oh my goodness, they are HUGE! I guess to carry babies they need to be.
excellent Gudrun.. and I also love that fluffy little baby you have.
Gudrun club has replied to Shuttering Yukon
Thank you so much, Wendi! Yes, they are big birds- they need to be because they eat frogs;-) It's quite amazing how many wild animals have made cities their home- they lose space in the countryside because of intensive farming but some manage the move to the city.
Clickity Click has replied to Shuttering Yukon
Hmm if the storks do indeed bring human babies ... who brings the stork babies? lol
7 years ago.
Gudrun club has replied to Clickity Click
I've been wondering about that too, they must be stressed out between catching frogs, delivering human babies and breeding their own chicks,-)

Thanks a lot, Val! The nest has been there for years- it's very popular with storks;-) One year a macho male threw out the occupant male and moved in with the lady...

Goodness that was an assertive macho male ... wonder how the lady stork felt about that? lol

Gudrun club has replied to Clickity Click
Thanks very much, Chris! The duck was the only fluffy baby so late in the year- most young birds were already in the less attractive in-between stage.
Clickity Click has replied to Gudrun club
Ah yes the in-between stage ... a lot like the teen age years for people. lol

Lovely set of images Gudrun. I especially like the one in the Notes of the little duckling. Having tried on a few occasions now to get a shot of one of these turbo-charged little fluff balls I'm most impressed with your results! :)

Thank you, Paul! The little duck was hindered by all the waterlily leaves, it couldn't go as fast as it wanted;-) Nevertheless many of my photos were for the bin....
