Lonesome tree

Lonesome tree
A solitary juniper tree (Juniperus comunis, thank you Isabel!) and one of my favourite trees. This is on one of my more regular approaches to the ridge and so I greet it like an old friend. Surrounded by lavender and so I suppose the terrain should be called 'cantueso'.

Gudrun, Jenny McIntyre, Gisela Plewe, Nouchetdu38 and 32 other people have particularly liked this photo

Lovely country to get to walk in. I have never see a tree but know of Juniper as small plants, have to do some digging for info.

Different varieties and sizes. I think they all produce useful berries.
Many thanks, Steve! I am hoping to get round to catching up on viewing members' galleries soon; I've simply been too busy of late!

I LIKE PEBBLE SLIDES, ALTHOUGH THEY ARE NOT VERY GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, PAM IF TOO MANY PEOPLE DO THEM! BUT IT'S AN ILLUSION HERE, JUST A FEW LOOSE STONES!

Lovely composition. It must smell wonderful too.

Andy Rodker club has replied to Jean
There are so many competing smells that it is difficult to say, Jean! Lavender, rosemary, thyme and juniper have to compete with the powerful smell of the cistus, which often dominates everything..

So beautiful, Andy. I understand completely about feeling familial affection for landmark trees and other things along normal walks. I don't know how you feel about these things but to me, trees are every bit as sentient as a human, it's only that they are totally different to us in such a vast way that we cannot truly understand them/vice-versa. I don't know if you are aware but trees and plants have auras just like we do, and if you cut a limb/leaf off of them and take a picture which can see the aura, it will show a ghost image of the limb/leaf until it fades away--exactly like us. Anyway, I really like your friend, what a beauty! :)

You wanted to know more about the namesake of the lake we stayed near at The Cove Palisades...here's your answer, along with a link! :D

Named after Billy Chinook, a Native American of the Wasco tribe who traveled with explorers John C. Frémont and Kit Carson in their 1843-4 iexpeditions.

Andy Rodker club has replied to Janet Brien club
I knew I had heard the name before, Janet I just wasn't sure where from but I was certain it was a native American of some renown.
Affinity with trees; yes I go along with your sentiment, if doubtful about the "science". But I talk to trees a lot and get vibes in return, sometimes along the lines of "oh for goodness sake go away and leave me alone" but occasionally more positive! :o)

A fantastic photo here - maybe it's a solitary tree, but it does have wonderful neighbours - the lavender and grasses
