The "Big Merino"

The "Big Merino"
With the "Big Banana" (at Coffs Harbour) the "Big Merino" in Goulburn is probably one of Australia's best known "Big" tourist landmarks. You can read more about it here. I was fortunate that these people decided to pose just when I had the camera ready!

HaarFager, Berny, Nouchetdu38, Gillian Everett and 25 other people have particularly liked this photo

Wow, it sure is big! :-) I've seen the Big Banana! So I guess I'll have to return to see the Big Merino. The people posing in front of it make this photo even more fun.

A mammoth woolly...

Last time I saw this it was a petrol station at the southern end of Goulburn. It appears to have wandered off to somewhere else.
That was several decades ago...

Yes, it was moved in 2007 following a re-routing of the highway, Graham.

Fantastic shot, George!
At 15.2 m (50 ft) tall, this statue is a true giant and, in my opinion, indicative of the importance of Merino sheep breeding in Australia.

Thank you. Merino fine wool is still important, though less now than years ago, with the arrival of synthetics. This is one of the prime areas for its production.

I agree and dare to say that natural fibers like Merino wool are irreplaceable, even though synthetic fiber manufacturers and lobbyists still claim the opposite to promote sales of their products, including sports underwear. Furthermore, I hope that the demand for natural fibers like Merino wool will increase again in the foreseeable future — under better conditions for the health of animals, humans, and nature.
