It was odd indeed! But that's Portland for you - we proudly say "Keep Portland Weird' (sadly we didn't come up with it, our rival city - in jest, in artistic fun - Austin, Texas did. but we think we are weirder than them!).

The actually startled me when I first saw them. But delightfully so.

Our city is known for strange, though we tend to use the word 'weird'! (You may have been hearing about my town recently in the news for standing up to the feds - though maybe it isn't internationally noticed: Portland, Oregon.)

We have a strong core of protestors. Most of whom are peaceful. There is continued difficulty in officers of all levels and crowd control. The officers are not trained to deal with large crowds in a pacifist way. There are methods. They (the officers) are afraid of loosing control, but they need to figure out that pushing isn't the way. And I don't approve of the violent actions taken by some protestors, but the story of who did what is very complicated. Each article I've read has a different take, but I know first hand reports on the ground that tell the story of just people calling out in protest and press and people trying to help other people all being come down on by the officers. I'm a pacifist. I believe people need to make their voice heard. Change is hard especially for those who feel their way of being is challenged. It's understandable, but that doesn't mean they should ignore the rights of those who are challenging them.

And the reason the prosecutor isn't prosecuting the protestors is because they hadn't done anything outside of their right to protest. The ones who do are being prosecuted.

But fear not, our city is not in ruins. In general we support the protests as we have not seen the full amount of change needed to have happened yet. We need major changes to our police situation.

Sorry, I could go on for a long time...

Do you know of the peace group, Servas? It's a host/traveller organization. I'm a very long time member, host and traveller. Happy to talk (well, text?) with you about it if you are interested.

Never heard before. Well, I am not keen to join it at the moment. But definitely a good cause! Happy to see such organizations exists. So, I will at least first just read what they (you) tell about your activities on the Servas web pages.
