The Royal Garrison Church was originally part of a hospital founded in 1212 by the Bishop of Winchester. The nave housed the sick while the chancel served as the hospital's chapel. The building later served as part of the Governor of Portsmouth's residence before being restored in the 1860s. Although the nave was badly damaged in a 1941 fire bombing raid on Portsmouth, the chancel remains roofed and furnished.

HFF everyone. I hope you all have a lovely weekend. Thanks to all who have commented on and/or left yellow stars on my images over the past week.

Even in a partially ruined state it's beautiful! I always like the free space around your churches, ours are usually hemmed in by other buildings.

An inspiring building, despite (or perhaps also because of) its traumatic history.

It's not open at the moment because of Covid-19, but normally the chancel functions fully as a church. The nave is not roofed but have been re-paved with seats and benches arranged around the sides. It is often used for open air weddings.

Glad you like it Tanja.........and thanks.

Oh, I love this picture Keith. It's very familiar to me and a great walk from the front at Southsea and back for fish and chips ;-)) There is something very captivating about this ruin, and you have captured it beautifully.

HFF Keith, and wish you a good and safe weekend.

A lovely building with an interesting history. I like that it began as a hospital. The Bishop of Winchester sounds like the kind of Christian I admire.
