Ein Russischer Bär - A Jersey tiger - PiPs

Some also refer to the pictured diurnal moth Euplagia quadripunctaria as the "Russian bear", alluding to the very hairy caterpillars. Today, the species name Spanish flag is more commonly used because the butterfly's coloration is characterized by a bright red and a white-yellow and thus resembles the colors of the Spanish national flag. A special feature: They can filter out toxins from the absorbed plant juices and store them in their body tissues. The conspicuous red color of the hind wings, which they show when disturbed, probably serves as a warning color.
This butterfly species is relatively common and its population is not considered endangered.
