So wohnten Römer - How Romans lived

The Pompejanum in Aschaffenburg gives an impression of how noble Romans lived. Inspired by the excavations in Pompeii, the Bavarian King Ludwig I commissioned the architect Friedrich von Gärtner to build an idealised Roman residence in 1840-1848. The photo shows the atrium, an upwardly open rectangular interior of a house with the water basin decorated with a figure, as known from the Casa del Fauno in Pompeii. The rainwater that flowed into the basin was collected below the basin and was used for washing dishes and watering plants.
The picture was taken in the entrance area of the Pompeianum.
