Ein Profiteur des Klimawandels - A profiteer of climate change - PiPs

The carpenter bee ( Xylocopa violacea), with 23 - 28 mm the largest native bee species, was known only in the Upper Rhine Plain until the 1980s. Since then, it has spread throughout Germany due to rising annual temperatures. Despite its size and dangerous appearance, this wild bee, which can sting, does not behave aggressively towards humans.
In the photo you can see a specimen just visiting a meadow sage blossom. When the bee's proboscis enters the flower to suck nectar, a "plate" is moved in the process, causing the flower's stamens to lower like a turnpike and powder the insect's back with pollen (see main picture and PiP). In older sage flowers, the pistils of the meadow sage hang down in an arc. When the bee "loaded" with pollen visits such a flower, it touches the stigma with its back and transfers pollen from other sage flowers. This is how pollination takes place.
The photo was taken in the Botanical Garden of the University of Würzburg.
