THE DEAL
If you feel like a change
you can swap your present condition
for a case of dizziness,
bed for breathlessness,
cramps for unconsciousness.
You can lower your blood pressure
in return for a sick headache,
bore yourself to death
watching wheels going round,
or die of blood poisoning.
When you've cut some sort of deal
with the laws of nature
you can totter out of there
in thrall to the velvet hour,
sensing around you
the promise of night-scented streets
and the recklessness of summer.
You wonder what you would give
in exchange for this.

O ACORDO
Se precisas de uma mudança
podes trocar a tua condição actual
por um caso de tontura,
cama para a falta de ar,
espasmos para a inconsciência.
Podes baixar a tua pressão arterial
por troca com uma forte dor de cabeça,
aborreceres-te de morte
a observar as rodas a rodarem,
ou morrer por envenenamento do sangue.
Quando chegares a algum acordo
com as leis da natureza
podes ir-te embora a cambalear
para a escravidão da hora de veludo,
sentindo em teu redor
a promessa de ruas perfumadas pela noite
e a imprudência do verão.
Admira-te com o que poderias
trocar por isto.
