APSINTHION

APSINTHION
What did I do in the war?
Son, I watched a download bar
and drank the last thing in the house.
I ran the show on meshugaas
the way some ancient dynamo
we couldn't replace would only go
on walnut oil or cherry must.
My poems sucked. My guitar grew dust.

But when we heard the star would fall,
did we choose to die like sheep?
Hell no - we were men, and blessed to know the hour and place...I jest.
One by one we fell asleep
and that is how they found us all.

"Real danger flirts with the things we most dread as poets. Perhaps the biggest risk of all is that of being largely understood and then found to be talking a pile of garbage. But risk is also writing with real feeling, as Frost did, while somehow avoiding sentimentality; simplicity, as Cavafy did, and somehow avoiding artlessness; daring to be prophetic, as Rilke did, and miraculously avoiding pretentiousness; writing with real originality, as Dickinson did, while somehow avoiding cliché" Don Paterson.

The problem is after Fernando PESSOA is difficult to be original; so, most of us (we are close to be 1 Million poets in Portugal) are condemned to the cliché!

It would be a good poetry workshop exercise to begin a poem :"What did I do in the war?" I might try it! Okrzyki!

I was in a guerrilla war for 5 years in my life.

For me the "exercise" has no meaning! I know the real thing!
