A local farm, Little Busveal, Saint Day.

A local farm, Little Busveal, Saint Day.
Little Busveal Farm, with thatched roof (common at one time - much rarer now). I went for a walk past this farm today but couldn't take a shot for technical reasons (my phone-camera is playing up.) But I thought I'd taken a shot some years back and found it.
Best enlarged for a closer view of this thatch style.

Ist es wirklich Stroh? Bei uns werden sie mit Schilf gedeckt. Ist allerdings auch aus der Mode gekommen, auch weil die Feuerversicherung so teuer ist.

Thank you, Jens!
Yes, a kind of straw. There are also reed thatches in parts of Britain.
And yes, I know all about the insurance. One weekend in the summer of 1982, I did three things in one. My brother drove my car to Bath, where my parents were thinking of opening a wine shop, I wanted to deliver leaflets for a new kind of house insurance for thatch owners (I worked for an insurance brokers at the time) and I wanted to give my brother driving practice in country lanes over many hours to boost his confidence and help him pass his driving test later that week.
Result? I saw Bath for the time, my parents eventually opened a wine shop in South London, and my brother passed his test first time!
And I didn't manage to sell a single insurance policy!

Einer meiner Brüder ist auch bei der Versicherung als Schadensregulierer, das mindert aber nicht meine Abneigung gegen diese Branche. ;-)

Are you in Cornwall at present Andy?
Andy Rodker club has replied to Nick Weall club
Yes, Nick. Family health issues. I can't drive thanks to Brexit, and my mobile phone, aka my camera, decided that the day of my flight here was the ideal time to pop its clogs! I have been here 10 days already and haven't seen the coast once or even been for a local inland walk. Far too much else to do!

A beautiful and well kept farm- I guess the insurance premiums aren't cheap with a thatched roof;-)

Les toits de chaumes sont de beaux toits ! on en voit de moins en moins ..... c'est normal car les prix des assurances sont beaucoup plus importants !

It looks idyllic Andy! Thatches are not so rare around here, with many new village houses having a thatched roof.

Wonderful cottage, and as Rosalyn says above - thatches are quite common here in North Devon. In fact at one time, thatching used to be classed as a dying trade, but there are lots of coursework at colleges which teach thatching - so it's not dying anymore.

Andy Rodker club has replied to Jenny McIntyre club
Pleased it's alive and well. I used to know a thatcher once - He worked in Wiltshire mainly.
Thank you, Jenny! Please see my reply to Jens above!

Hi Andy
I like this picture very much!
I must say the style of thatch looks very different to what I see around me. Maybe a Cornish tradition?
Best Wishes, and stay safe!!
