If the petals were more serrated they could be of the carnation family. Otherwise I can't enlighten you further, Andy!
In any case, a very nice radiant colour in the garden.

Well done, Eric!!!!
Actually, later on I got my phone camera to verify that it is in fact flax!

I love this word "flax", unknown to me. Brief and effective! Thanks for the teaching, Prof. ;-)

Well, apart from my natural didactic nature, I can no longer teach English as my voice was adversely affected by Covid (2 vocal cords were knocked out!). It is taking a long time to restore them! so at present I am a (poor) gentleman of leisure!

Belle journée

Possibly, Daniele but I could find lin / flax in English as being related to dianthus / carnations!.

Thank you all! I have two suggestions and will research further.

OK, 5 minutes of research later, and I feel like an idiot! Of course they are a variety of dianthus / pink / carnation!!! How I ddn't get this straight away I have no idea!
Andy Rodker club has added
No, I was wrong. I have confirmation that they are flax, as some of you suggested, so well done you lot! I have put a Wikipedia link below the photo. Gad I finally put that one to rest!!!!

Thank you for the link, Frany. But now I am more confused than before! Is it a 'lin' or is it a carnation! I thought I had the answer from Eric before but, unless they are the same family (which seems unlikely), I am more prone to go with you!

I think this one one self-seeds as I think I remember it from a few years ago. (Not last year as I spent May, June and July in hospital!)

For what it's worth Andy...........I think Dan has it nailed. If you google scarlet or red flax you'll see lots of photos.

Whatever it is, the flowers are really beautiful and you've captured it nicely, especially the shadows.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before, but I use an Android app on my phone called "Plantnet" which is generally pretty good at helping to identify flowers, plants and trees.

My Google 'Lens' facility eventually came up trumps, Keith but I'll give Plantnet a shot next time! Thanks for the info. The plant is, as you say, Red Flax.
