Misery! Calima strikes again!

Misery! Calima strikes again!
Calima:- Saharan dust storm. What should have been a glorious, if hot, day totally ruined by what has become a far too frequent occurance! The temperature was 39ºC so not even any let up from the heat! Miserable indeed!
For the complete gloomy effect, best on full screen!

sea-herdorf, Heide, Marco F. Delminho, micritter and 38 other people have particularly liked this photo

This dust from the Sahara also arrived here in Lisbon today, not with such intensity but clearly visible in the cars parked on the streets. It is the third time this year, it seems that it is becoming a recurring phenomenon. In the past it happened once every ten, fifteen years...

Yes,
Thank you, Paulo.
I moved to Madrid in 2010. I didn't recall, or even hear about, 'Calima' until a couple of years ago at most. Maybe because I was living in the centre of Madrid then and weather phenomena aren't so visible among the appartment blocks.
But, since moving to Algete and with amazing scenery from where I now live, I can attest to the fact that I've experienced at least 10 such incidents these past two years!

Thank you, Doug. Still there for most of the day today but very strong gale force gusts started just now, will hopefully clear it away.

Last time it reached my car Andy. I had a light covering. It really is so miserable for you, especially in the heat! It does however make a superb picture. That's a tiny consolation!
Good evening and I hope tomorrow is better.

Andy Rodker club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
Thank you, Rosa. Well we've just had a mini but sharp thunderstorm, preceded by gale force winds for about half an hour. But I look up and the bloody dust cloud is still there! GRRR!

Oh you poor thing. That does look so ominous indeed and knowing the view you normally have of the valley to the mountains, which is now completely hidden by that huge cloud of dust. I would hate to have the windows open with that swirling around - think of all the dusting later!!! Otherwise you'd have to swelter it out with the windows shut!!! Decisions, decisions.
Andy Rodker club has replied to Jenny McIntyre club
Well, one needs a complete mind change in this climate, Jenny!
In a normal hot summer, the windows and shutters are closed from mid morning to very late at night. They are only opened between about 1 or 2 am and 10 am. Otherwise the heat penetrates the house! When I first came here, that was counter-intuitive to me and I always got it wrong!! (Like in England I was forever opening the windows during the day to let in some fresh air! WRONG!!!! I soon learnt!)
And you are so right about the calima and the dusting!
The soil in Central Spain leads to very fine dust in the air anyway so dusting needs doing daily! With this calima business, dusting is needed almost every hour, food needs covering at all tmes, and so on and so forth!

Andy Rodker club has replied to ROL/Photo club
Yes, exactly what we had, Roland! Today, fortunately, it has finally gone (well 75% has gone, there is still a trace of the taste of it in the air and the hiorizon is not yet sharp). But the temperature last night was comfortable and the hot winds that you describe have changed to a refreshing cool breeze! I trust you get this cooler wind very soon!
The other issue is the sudden increase in forest fires, a month earlier than usual. Again, I hope you are spared those!
Best wishes,
Andy

I am guessing that the colours in your picture are true to life - it is very evocative! Sand storms are just a part of nature so these are nature's hues, but as you say the storms are getting more frequent.
