H. A. N. W. E. everyone!
Cantueso. The name of this lavender variety. It used to be thought of as the same as a similar-looking Provençal variety; it looks the same. But DNA profiling proved it was distinct. By the way, the two top 'petals' are in fact modified leaves.
ADDED NOTE: It seems I was misinformed. This Wilki link is more accurate and up-tp-date!

Andy Rodker club has replied to JeanI fell in love with them straight away, Jean.
I had thought that I loved the lavender fields of Provence more than almost anyhing. But these wild lavender plants in the mountains of central Spain pushed them into second place!
Bon weekend.

I think it is the same one!
Enjoy your Sunday

Andy Rodker club has replied to Amelia clubI keep seeing 'stoechas' in all the technical references.
Talking about aroma. Yes it is fab!! but only up to about midday. After that, the very powerful jara / cistus smell takes over and all else is obliterated!!
I added the Wiki link to José Manuel's comment below.
Many thanks!

Everything one might wish to know, including common names.
My comment about DNA profiling proving it to be a different species to Provençale lavender seems misplaced. I was quoting from a guide book to the Sistema Central (the only one in English that I know of), which is very good if a little dated now (1996), so DNA profiling was in its infancy which may account for the misinformation!

Many thanks, one of my favorite wild flowers.
