Steam engine or traction engine (I know someone will put me right very quickly!). Maurice gave me steam traction engine, which I am happy to go with! And yet, steamroller is the correct term (thank you José Manuel!)

I can't put you right Andy but I did look it up, Traction is a Latin name meaning Draw to pull something along. eBay calls all their models for sale Steam Traction engines. I think your exhibit here is more interesting than the name and I love the colour of this machine bit better than the Traditional Red & Black.

Thanks, Maurice.
Yes, I'll go with Steam traction engine and will change the title accordingly!

Many thanks, Steve,
There was a rusted plaque with some info but all I could read was a year, 1985, which I presume was the year it was restorednd moved here.
Best wishes,
Andy

Reminds me of workmen tarring the road although that's probably not what they were using. Used to love the smell.

It is still seen and the vehicles havn't changed all that much since my childhood, although I doubt they still use steam!

The translation has 'steamroller' which is the term I had on the tip of my tongue all day. Strange, because it is the only word I used when I was a child and when these were seen almost every day.
Thank you, José Manuel.

A lovely piece of history, this "steamroller" gives ideas and seems very operational - except in this particular place!
Nice shot, Andy!

Lovely capture, looks a bit like an Aveling & Porter steam roller to me.

I wondered if you might add your wisdom here, Stoneroad!!I
Many thanks!
I think it is more likely to be Spanish or, at a pinch French, made but I could easily be wrong!. I tried to read the name-plate and also the metal inscription nearby but both had rusted up and were illegible, at least to me. Sorry.

A wonderful piece of kit that looks to be well preserved and for what it's worth I would also call it a steam roller, It's a terrific exhibit and an excellent capture Andy.

Thank you, Rosa.
I remember being caught behind a procession of these leaving a county showground in either Blandford Forum or Wimborne Minster (I forget which one it was near! You will know, I'm sure!) as I took the scenic route (bad mistake) to see some clients in Parkstone.
In the days before mobile phones I had no way of contacting my clients until I could use a payphone at the next village and when I got to one two hours later there was no answer.
In Parkstone, I plied the knocker in vain. So I returned to London. I stopped off at a service station and called them again. This time they answered. They weren't happy but were reasonable people so they understood and we arranged another appointment.
A waste of time and petrol but a lovely drive... until then!

Oh wow - that is an old engine. I remember an old boss of mine in London, used to travel down to Cornwall to drive his old steamroller. Boy did it make a noise going along the roads. There used to be fairs showing off the old steam engines. Fabulous to see them.

Andy Rodker club has replied to Jenny McIntyre club
They still exist and are popular! Please see my reply to Rosa above, Jenny!
(Well they certainly were, much to my chagrin, in about 1994.)

Hi Andy

A very nice picture, and a very interesting piece of machinery.
I do agree with Stoneroad, it does look like an Aveling and Porter, but I am not an expert. I also note it is right hand drive, so maybe not French or Spanish..
The emblem on the front will tell you, if it is still there!!
I certainly remember the days when a steamroller like this would be used to lay tarmac on the road!

Best Wishes, and stay safe!!

I remember those days well too, Peter.
I tried to make something of the information board but sadly it had been constructed in iron and it had more or less completely rusted away!
Best wishes, Andy
