Parque del Oeste, Madrid. Civil War fortifications.

Parque del Oeste, Madrid. Civil War fortifications.
These formed part of the defences of Madrid against the Nationalists led by Franco. They held out for three years, Franco deciding in the end to abandon the siege and concentrate on winning the north of Spain, which won him the war eventually.

Indeed, but the barbarity of the Spanish Civil War lurks very close to the surface in these woods, Maurice and complete tranquility on a walk here just ain't possible 100%!

The fortification holds wonderful historical significance, but I cannot help but swoon over the beautiful dappled shadows of the forest there. So lovely!!

Well, I try to complete my 10,000 steps a day (I know it's not a reliably scientific target but there we are!).
In fact I try to complete 100,000 steps a week. So on some days (often on a Sunday!), I need to catch up and, time permitting, I put on the mileage (OK, kilometreage here!). Visiting some more distance parks such as this is both do-able and enjoyable!
I haven't missed my 100,000 steps a week since early March (the beginning of lockdown when I was pacing round my flat!). How anal is that?? - no need to answer that one!!! (unless you feel so obliged!)

Very nice photo - Andy. Thanks for telling us what this is, and also informing us that it helped Franco win the war in the end.

Well, it succeeded in defending Madrid from Franco, so he had to retreat from Madrid and try a different tactic, which worked. It gave Madrid another couple of years of the Republic.
